My Gigabyte X670E AORUS Master test bench suddenly refused to boot after removing an RTX 3090. No display, DRAM light on, A6 errors, CMOS reset didn’t work and Q-Flash didn’t solve it.
That left one option: pull the CMOS battery.
Unfortunately, Gigabyte put the battery in one of the worst possible locations imaginable. Getting to it meant removing the RAM, NVMe drive, motherboard backplate, heatsinks and multiple tiny screws just to reach a simple battery.
But after tearing the motherboard apart, the story took an unexpected turn.
The CMOS battery wasn’t actually the main problem. One of my RAM sticks appears to have failed.
And that led to an even more interesting discovery.
After getting the system running again with only ONE stick of DDR5, my Ryzen 9 7950X3D was still producing around 20.89 kH/s mining Monero — actually slightly higher than some of my comparable AM5 rigs running two sticks.
We’ve always talked about dual-channel RAM being extremely important for RandomX / XMR mining, especially on AM4. But AM5 may behave very differently.
Could one stick of DDR5 actually be enough for an AM5 CPU mining rig?
If further testing confirms this, it could reduce the cost of building AM5 CPU mining rigs and potentially lower power consumption as well.
I’ll be doing more testing comparing:
• 1 stick vs 2 sticks of DDR5
• XMR hashrate
• Power consumption
• Mining efficiency
• Different AM5 CPUs
• Different motherboards
• 7950X3D vs other Ryzen CPUs
We also take a look at the Rabid Mining Hub and my local XMR solo mining setup during the test.
