How To Fix an Overheating Bitaxe
Is your Bitaxe overheating, running a high error rate, or automatically lowering its frequency in AxeOS? In this video, I troubleshoot two Bitaxe Gamma 601 Bitcoin miners that can no longer run at their stock settings without overheating.
Both miners were running well below their expected hashrate, and when I restored their default frequency and voltage, their ASIC temperatures quickly climbed until AxeOS automatically downclocked them.
The suspected problem? Thermal paste.
I tear down one of the Bitaxes, remove the heatsink, inspect the thermal paste application, clean the BM1370 ASIC and heatsink with isopropyl alcohol, apply fresh thermal paste, and put everything back together. Then we fire it back up at the exact same settings to see if it actually fixed the overheating problem.
The result was a huge improvement — but after doing the same repair to my second Bitaxe, I got a very different result that might point to another issue.
If your Bitaxe is overheating, thermal throttling, showing a high hardware error rate, or not reaching its expected hashrate, this is an easy troubleshooting step worth checking.
