In a letter, the exchange allegedly urged US regulators to confirm whether banks can offer services to crypto businesses. This move comes before the US Congress hearing regarding \u201cOperation Chokepoint 2.0,\u201d where the crypto exchange\u2019s CLO will testify alongside other industry figures.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase Seeks Clarity On Crypto Banking Barriers<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday, Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-02-04\/coinbase-urges-us-to-remove-barriers-for-banks-crypto-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> that crypto exchange Coinbase had sent a letter to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC), asking the agencies to clarify the crypto banking status.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the letter, seen by the news media outlet, the exchange urged the OCC to withdraw an interpretive letter that \u201cimposes a de facto application process for novel bank activities\u201d and prevents the financial entities from entering the crypto market, according to Coinbase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exchange also asked the Fed and the FDIC to confirm if state-chartered banks can provide and outsource custody and execution services related to cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also highlighted a letter from three law firms retained by Coinbase. The letter argues that the existing federal laws and regulations already authorize banks to provide crypto services and engage with third-party service providers like the crypto exchange.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, Coinbase allegedly stated that banking <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/seeking-clarity-coinbase-asks-us-appeals-court-to-declare-crypto-trades-arent-securities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">regulators<\/a> must confirm it. The exchange\u2019s CPO, Faryar Shirzad, argued in an interview, \u201cIt\u2019s important for regulators to make clear that banks can work with third-party providers in providing trading and exchange services to their customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt Coinbase, we are very much of the view that we need a comprehensive ecosystem to support the crypto economy,\u201d Shirzad stated, adding, \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve been so active on bank issues, even though they involved regulatory fixes that helped the banks. In our view, it\u2019s beneficial to have broad participation in the crypto economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Banks \u2018On Hold\u2019 With Crypto Activities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US financial institutions have participated in markets for Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) through their trading and wealth management arms while refraining from allowing customers to use crypto assets for retail transactions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDIC has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iampaulgrewal\/status\/1852433093707387026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reportedly<\/a> issued letters between March 2022 and May 2023 asking certain financial institutions to pause planned or ongoing crypto-related activities while seeking additional information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, US banks have been in \u201ca holding pattern\u201d regarding offering crypto services. Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/financial-industry-to-jump-into-crypto-if-regulators-allow-it-bank-of-america-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">recently<\/a> stated that the US banking industry will embrace digital asset payments if the regulators allow it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the CEO affirmed that banks will \u201ccome hard\u201d to crypto when the regulations are clear.
