On February 13, Representatives Bryan Posthumus and Ron Robinson introduced HB 4087, a bill aimed at amending the state\u2019s Management and Budget Act. This proposed legislation would allow Michigan to establish a Bitcoin reserve using funds from the state\u2019s general and economic stabilization accounts.<\/p>\n

Michigan Joins Growing List Of States Considering Crypto Reserve Bill<\/h2>\n

The initiative is part of a broader trend<\/a> in which states across the country are considering crypto reserves as a means of diversification and long-term financial planning. Michigan\u2019s move brings the total number of US states with similar legislation to twenty.<\/p>\n

Representative Posthumus, an outspoken advocate for crypto adoption initially expressed his enthusiasm on Elon Musk\u2019s social media platform X, encouraging Michigan to join states like Texas<\/a> in leading crypto policy initiatives.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Texas Senator Charles Schwertner had introduced a comparable bill to the Texas Senate just a day before Michigan\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n

Key Provisions and Potential Impact<\/h2>\n

Under the proposed legislation, Michigan\u2019s treasurer would have the authority to allocate up to 10% of the state\u2019s general and economic stabilization funds<\/a> into cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n

The bill also includes provisions for lending the state\u2019s crypto holdings, provided such transactions do not increase financial risk. Additionally, Michigan\u2019s crypto investments would be required to be held through secure custody solutions or exchange-traded products issued by registered investment companies.<\/p>\n

Notably, this proposal reflects a growing recognition among states of the strategic value that digital assets might offer. Michigan\u2019s state pension fund already holds exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum through exchange-traded funds, signaling an existing interest in blockchain-based investments<\/a>.<\/p>\n
