{"id":14710,"date":"2025-02-24T14:47:21","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T14:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=14710"},"modified":"2025-02-24T14:47:21","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T14:47:21","slug":"eu-adds-russian-crypto-exchange-garantex-to-its-sanctions-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=14710","title":{"rendered":"EU Adds Russian Crypto Exchange Garantex To Its Sanctions List"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The European Union (EU) has added the Russia-based cryptocurrency exchange, Garantex, to its sixteenth sanctions package.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2025\/02\/24\/16th-package-of-sanctions-on-russia-s-war-of-aggression-against-ukraine-eu-lists-additional-48-individuals-and-35-entities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Announced on 24 February 2025, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the press release from the European Council said, \u201cFor the first time, the Council also decided to sanction, a crypto-currency exchange based in Russia, Garantex, which is closely associated with EU-sanctioned Russian banks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According the council, the sixteenth sanctions package \u201ccontinues targeting actors responsible for circumventing EU sanctions, including through third countries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanctions will also be imposed on\u00a0third countries actors directly supporting the Russian war effort,\u201d the EU added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Stablecoins are being used for payments in Russia&#8217;s drone industry only to be deposited at Garantex, a sanctioned Russian crypto exchange. Garantex has a record of being under scrutiny for alleged ties to illicit financial activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2022 US authorities accused Garantex of facilitating transactions linked to criminal actors, including ransomware groups like Conti and darknet marketplaces such as Hydra, which has since been shut down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The inclusion of Garantex is just one aspect of the EU\u2019s latest sanctions package.
