Network upgrades could require years of development and consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin does not face an imminent quantum-computing emergency, but Coinbase believes waiting for one would be a dangerous mistake.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange has been encouraging researchers, wallet developers and network participants to discuss a transition toward quantum-resistant cryptography.<\/p>\n<p>A sufficiently advanced quantum computer could eventually threaten some of the signature systems Bitcoin currently relies on to authorise transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s machines cannot carry out those attacks at practical scale. The difficulty is how long Bitcoin could take to prepare.<\/p>\n<h2>A Network That Moves Deliberately<\/h2>\n<p>Bitcoin\u2019s security comes partly from the caution with which changes are introduced. Unlike an ordinary software service, its developers cannot simply deploy a major new cryptographic system to every user overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Changes require technical testing and broad acceptance across wallet providers, node operators, miners and the wider network.<\/p>\n<p>BIP-360 is among the proposals being examined as a possible foundation for future changes to Bitcoin\u2019s output structure.<\/p>\n<p>Even a technically sound solution would raise questions about how existing wallets and older unspent coins should be treated.<\/p>\n<h2>The Problem Of Dormant Coins<\/h2>\n<p>Bitcoin held in older wallet types, especially coins belonging to users who are no longer active, could be especially difficult to protect through a future migration.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals affecting those coins may create disputes over decentralisation and ownership rights.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase\u2019s argument is therefore about preparation, not panic.
