Under Gary <\/span>Gensler\u2019s<\/span> leadership, crypto and DeFi protocols, including Uniswap (UNI), were heavily scrutinized. <\/span>Centralized ramps and exchanges were hit<\/span> first. Binance, Kraken, and Coinbase <\/span>were sued<\/span> for millions, sometimes billions of dollars. <\/span><\/p>\n

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) alleged they enabled the trading of unregistered securities and, in some instances, facilitated money laundering. Binance settled for over $4 billion, with Changpeng Zhao stepping down as CEO, while others, like Coinbase, opted to fight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday, February 25, the United States SEC officially <\/span>closed<\/span><\/a> its investigation into Uniswap, one of the <\/span>world\u2019s<\/span> largest DeFi platforms. Crucially, the agency decided against enforcement action. <\/span><\/p>\n

This move is a <\/span>major<\/span> victory for DeFi, a vital sub-sector providing liquidity for crypto projects serving users. By dropping the case, the SEC acknowledged that the DEX operates within the law. <\/span><\/p>\n

Most importantly, it validates its offerings, potentially making UNI one of the best cryptos to buy<\/a> in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

Uniswap Wins Over SEC: DEX Markets In The Clear?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The<\/span> probe into Uniswap began in 2021 and escalated with a Wells notice in April 2024. While a Wells notice signals the intention to sue, it <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span> guarantee a lawsuit, <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> a warning. <\/span><\/p>\n

The agency claimed Uniswap was operating illegally, engaging in unregistered broker activity, and issuing unregistered securities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Uniswap Labs, the team behind the decentralized exchange (DEX), countered that its protocol\u2014autonomous, powered by self-executing smart contracts on public ledgers like Ethereum and BNB Chain\u2014<\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> fit the <\/span>SEC\u2019s<\/span> accusations. Its decentralized nature, they argued, rendered the <\/span>agency\u2019s<\/span> claims inapplicable.<\/span><\/p>\n

As expected, the Wells Notice against Uniswap sparked debate. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hayden Adams, the founder of <\/span>Uniswap<\/span>, expressed disappointment but said he was ready to fight. He stated on X that the SEC was targeting legitimate projects while overlooking frauds like FTX.<\/span><\/p>\n

The FTX collapse in November 2022 forced crypto prices lower, dragging Bitcoin below $16,000. <\/span><\/p>\n

After months of pushback\u2014including a 40-page rebuttal from Uniswap\u2014the SEC dropped the case. <\/span>This<\/span> confirms that Uniswap operates outside the <\/span>agency\u2019s<\/span> regulatory framework, a win for both the protocol and the broader industry. <\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Uniswap\u2019s<\/span> view, the new United States SEC leadership now <\/span>recognizes<\/span><\/a> that there is a<\/span> \u201c<\/span>more effective path to protecting American consumers<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For DeFi projects under scrutiny, this sets a precedent. With the case collapsing, it suggests that open-source, <\/span>smart<\/span> contract-based platforms <\/span>aren\u2019t<\/span> legally financial entities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Past rulings bolster this\u2014like the 2023 <\/span>Risley v. Uniswap Labs<\/span><\/em><\/a> decision<\/a>, where a judge ruled decentralized protocols like Uniswap fall beyond the <\/span>SEC\u2019s<\/span> jurisdiction. <\/span>Going forward<\/span>,<\/span> Uniswap said it is open to dialogue and assisting regulators and lawmakers in<\/span> \u201c<\/span>developing clear, sensible laws and rules for new technology like DeFi<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Wrong Timing? UNI Price Bears Target $7 Bottom<\/span><\/h2>\n

While this<\/span> \u201c<\/span>structural<\/span>\u201d <\/span>victory is vital, it arrives during a turbulent time for crypto, with bears in control. Bitcoin and the broader market are sliding. <\/span><\/p>\n

At press time,<\/span> the total crypto market cap is down 4% to around $2.95 trillion.<\/span><\/p>\n
