This approval for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/tag\/bbva\" target=\"_blank\">BBVA<\/a> marks the conclusion of a multi-year process for the Spanish lender to allow for its clients to get exposure to digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2020\/12\/07\/spains-second-largest-bank-will-soon-launch-crypto-services-sources\" target=\"_blank\">CoinDesk reported<\/a> that BBVA planned to dip its toes in the sector, pending regulatory approval because MiCA wasn&#8217;t yet in place. <\/p>\n<p>BBVA initially planned to launch its crypto services from Switzerland rather than Spain or other EU countries because Switzerland already had a clear regulatory framework for digital assets under the Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).<\/p>\n<p>In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2025\/01\/02\/garanti-bbva-s-to-provide-crypto-trading-services-in-hint-of-things-to-come\" target=\"_blank\">BBVA launched crypto trading in Turkey<\/a> through a local subsidiary. <\/p>\n<p>BBVA isn\u2019t the first European bank to enter crypto, with Germany&#8217;s Deutsche Bank developing an Ethereum rollup with ZKsync and offering custody with Taurus, while Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale\u2019s SG-FORGE is launching a euro stablecoin on the XRP Ledger, CoinDesk previously reported. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spanish financial giant Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) has gotten approval from the country&#8217;s financial regulator to offer bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) trading to its clients, according to a Reuters report.
