{"id":1704,"date":"2024-10-26T17:33:47","date_gmt":"2024-10-26T17:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=1704"},"modified":"2024-10-26T17:33:47","modified_gmt":"2024-10-26T17:33:47","slug":"south-korea-to-regulate-cross-border-crypto-transactions-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=1704","title":{"rendered":"South Korea To Regulate Cross-Border Crypto Transactions In 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korean authorities announced their plan to fully regulate cross-border crypto transactions by the end of 2025 to combat a \u201cblind spot\u201d enabling tax evasion by foreign exchanges.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koran Authorities To Regulate Cross-Border Crypto Transactions<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to local news media outlet Edaily, South Korea\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Choi Sang-mok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edaily.co.kr\/News\/Read?newsId=02023766639056528&amp;mediaCodeNo=257&amp;OutLnkChk=Y%5C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shared<\/a> the country\u2019s plan to regulate cross-border crypto transactions at a Group of 20 (G20) meeting in Washington.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choi revealed that the Korean government plans to create a legal basis for authorities overseeing foreign exchanges to monitor these transactions and share them with the pertinent financial authorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting next year, Korean authorities will create new definitions of \u201cvirtual assets\u201d and virtual asset operators\u201d in the Foreign Transaction Act. These definitions will \u201cdefine virtual assets as a \u2018third type\u2019 that is not included in foreign exchange, external payment instruments, or capital transactions,\u201d Choi explained on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, crypto deposits and withdrawals made by foreign operators, customers, and personal wallets will be defined as a \u201ccross-border crypto transaction.\u201d Additionally, companies that handle cross-border transactions involving crypto assets must register with Korean financial authorities and report transaction details to the Bank of Korea monthly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choi noted the information collected would also be shared with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/south-korea-could-delay-crypto-taxation-until-2028-due-to-investors-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Tax Service<\/a>, Korea Customs Service, financial authorities, and international financial centers to monitor illegal transactions for statistics, analysis, and research.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Korea\u2019s Increasing Demand For Cross-Border Transactions<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the G20 meeting, the South Korean DPM explained that the new regulatory plan comes amid an increase in cross-border crypto transactions. Choi revealed that the recent surge is due to stablecoins <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/global-adoption-of-stablecoins-leaves-us-in-the-dust-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">popularity<\/a>, as it can be used for cross-border transactions and payments \u201cjust like real foreign exchanges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the high demand for cross-border transactions using crypto assets can\u2019t be verified and regulated as there\u2019s no legal basis for crypto assets in the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, stablecoin listings have been increasing on domestic exchanges, and the daily trading volume has already exceeded 300 billion won this year, up from 191 billion won last year. Cross-border transactions involving virtual assets are increasing, but their legal nature has not yet been agreed upon.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This created a \u201cblind spot\u201d that allegedly has been <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/lazarus-group-unleashes-blockchain-game-to-exploit-chrome-and-steal-crypto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploited<\/a> for illegal activities, hiding criminal proceeds, and tax evasion. Per the report, the National Tax Service and Korea Customs Service rely on case-by-case requests or seizure warrants to obtain information about cross-border crypto transactions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South Korean Economy and Finance Ministry plans to conclude the revision of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act and related laws in the first half of next year.
