Thailand has officially approved the trading of two major stablecoins, Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC). <\/span>The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced<\/a> the approval on 6 March 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe SEC has revised the criteria for the cryptocurrencies list to be used for investment in digital tokens through ICOs process,\u00a0<\/span>for ICO portals to receive from investors or issuers for transactions, and for digital asset exchanges to use as base trading pairs with two additional cryptocurrencies, namely, USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT),\u201d the announcement said.<\/p>\n

On 10 March 2025, Tether issued an announcement<\/a> regarding the same.<\/p>\n

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said, \u201cWe highly value the Thai market and are continuously exploring ways to enhance our services and offerings.\u201d He added, \u201cOur priority is to provide users in Thailand with a secure, transparent, and reliable stablecoin experience.\u201d Tether\u2019s USD\u20ae has a market cap of $142 billion and is the world\u2019s most widely used stablecoin.<\/p>\n

Importantly, the amended regulations by the Thai SEC will take effect from 16 March 2025.<\/p>\n

Currently There Are Five Listed Cryptocurrencies<\/h2>\n

The Thai SEC has specified the list of eligible cryptocurrencies to be used for investment in digital tokens.<\/p>\n

Currently, there are five listed cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Stellar (XLM), and cryptocurrencies are used for testing settlement with Bank of Thailand\u2018s Programmable Payment Sandbox.<\/p>\n

Recently, Thailand\u2019s former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, expressed optimism about the potential of cryptocurrencies to revolutionize the financial landscape in Thailand.<\/p>\n

Shinawatra made a push for Thailand\u2019s financial institutions to be more open to cryptocurrency. He cited incoming US President Donald Trump\u2019s pro-crypto stance.
