{"id":17587,"date":"2025-03-13T12:46:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T12:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=17587"},"modified":"2025-03-13T12:46:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T12:46:51","slug":"crypto-trading-volumes-dropped-20-in-february-as-tariffs-threats-fazed-investors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=17587","title":{"rendered":"Crypto Trading Volumes Dropped 20% in February as Tariffs Threats Fazed Investors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Crypto trading volumes dropped sharply in February as concerns that President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs on Mexico, Canada and other countries would stifle international trade reduced investor demand for adding to risky investments.<\/p>\n<p>Combined spot and derivatives trading volume on centralized exchanges fell 21% to $7.2 trillion, the lowest level since October, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.coindesk.com\/reports\/exchange-review-february\" target=\"_blank\">CoinDesk Data\u2019s latest Exchange Review<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Since November, the Trump administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trump-canada-steel-alumimum-tariffs-1.7480309\" target=\"_blank\">threatened to impose tariffs<\/a> on trading partners including China and the European Union in response to what it considers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/cx2gprz84rlt\" target=\"_blank\">unfair trade practices<\/a> against the U.S. in various industries.<\/p>\n<p>Among centralized exchanges, Binance maintained its position as the largest spot trading platform with a 27% market share. It was followed by Crypto.com (8.1%) and Bybit (7.4%) with Coinbase (COIN) and MEXC Global rounding out the top five.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/s3y3vcno\/production\/e86e278d5faae04732858c8789a22c8eabfe5b12-1120x635.jpg?auto=format\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Derivatives trading also saw a significant decline, with CME \u2014 the largest institutional crypto trading venue \u2014 recording its first volume drop in five months. CME\u2019s trading volume fell 20% to $229 billion, with bitcoin futures activity sliding 20% to $175 billion and ether futures falling 13% to $35.9 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The decline in trading coincided with a drop in the BTC CME annualized basis, which fell to 4.08%, its lowest level since March 2023. Nevertheless, the CME\u2019s market share among derivatives exchanges grew to a record 4.67%.<\/p>\n<p>The increase suggests that while retail trading activity has been waning, with Robinhood (HOOD) recently reporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2025\/03\/11\/robinhood-crypto-trading-fell-29-as-february-price-slide-distanced-retail-investors\" target=\"_blank\">its crypto trading volume fell 29% in February<\/a>, institutional interest in the industry is holding.<\/p>\n<p>Total open interest across all trading pairs on centralized exchanges fell 30% to $78.8 billion, the lowest since Nov. 5, the report noted, reflecting the heavy liquidations endured during the recent drawdown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto trading volumes dropped sharply in February as concerns that President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs on Mexico, Canada and other countries would stifle international trade reduced investor demand for adding to risky investments.
