{"id":19456,"date":"2025-03-28T01:01:42","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T01:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=19456"},"modified":"2025-03-28T01:01:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T01:01:42","slug":"canary-ceo-says-firms-unconventional-altcoin-etfs-are-bet-on-emerging-overlooked-tokens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=19456","title":{"rendered":"Canary CEO says firm\u2019s unconventional altcoin ETFs are bet on emerging, overlooked tokens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/canary-capital\/\">Canary Capital<\/a> CEO Steven McClurg said the firm\u2019s recent \u201cout-of-the-box\u201d crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) filings are a calculated approach to engage with assets that have potential and unmet demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CryptoSlate,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> McClurg explained the rationale behind the company\u2019s filings, ranging from the first Litecoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/litecoin\/\">LTC<\/a>) ETF to the first fund to give exposure to a non-fungible token (NFT) collection in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He explained:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf you\u2019re a big shop like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/blackrock\/\">BlackRock<\/a>, you can afford to take chances. If you\u2019re a smaller shop like us, we don\u2019t do anything unless we really feel like we can actually get it done. [\u2026] We\u2019re pretty conscientious about our time and money, and we want to make sure that everything we\u2019re doing is something that is viable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>First Litecoin filing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Oct. 16, Canary Capital<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/canary-capital-files-s-1-application-for-first-spot-litecoin-etf-in-the-us\/\">filed an S-1 form<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to list the first spot Litecoin ETF, diverging from the trend of filings for spot Solana (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/solana\/\">SOL<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/xrp\/\">XRP<\/a> ETFs by other firms at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClurg explained that the decision came after Canary realized that former US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman Gary Gensler named Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>), Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>), and Litecoin as non-securities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cSince the SEC had previously approved Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, and we saw a couple of people file for Solana, we decided to look at opportunities that we believed would potentially get approval under the old administration. And we believe that one [Litecoin] had very good odds.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, McClurg said the firm believed at the time that the LTC token distribution model was unlikely to be classified as a securities offering, strengthening the decision to file for an ETF.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Filing for an outlier<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Nov. 12, less than one month after filing the first Litecoin ETF and diverging from the trend, Canary<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/canary-capital-files-application-for-a-spot-hbar-etf\/\">filed the first spot Hedera<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/hedera\/\">HBAR<\/a>) ETF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysts were surprised by the decision since HBAR is not part of the 20 largest cryptocurrencies by market cap. Additionally, Hedera only has $111 million in total value locked (TVL) on the network as of March 27, far lower than major Layer-1 blockchains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClurg said that Canary filed for the ETF because it identified HBAR as a sound token with demand that had not come under the radar of other ETF issuers. He added that the firm\u2019s goal is to find such opportunities before they become industry trends. In his words:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe want to find the opportunity that exists one year from now, two years from now, because if we are early to the punch, then we will get those flows when everybody else is scrambling to file.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClurg also said that Canary believed that like LTC, HBAR\u2019s distribution was unlikely to be classified as a security and the filing would \u201cdo well\u201d under the former SEC regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price of HBAR spiked roughly 470% within a month after the ETF filing, jumping from $0.065 to $0.368 on Dec. 6, 2024, before giving up some of its gains amid the recent market downturn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HBAR was trading at $0.192 as of press time, up nearly 200% since Canary\u2019s filing in November last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Early bets on underrecognized infrastructures<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another of Canary\u2019s moves<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/2059208\/000183988225013999\/canary-s1_030525.htm\">diverging from major trends<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the filing for a spot Axelar (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/axelar\/\">AXL<\/a>) ETF on March 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filing follows a similar thesis of preemptive positioning and has also surprised the crypto market since AXL is not among theough to be included in the top 100\u00a0 cryptocurrencies by market cap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClurg said that\u00a0 Axelar has received little mainstream attention but it is widely integrated into developer environments and protocol infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cI was at ETHDenver, I was at a couple of other places, and I started talking to protocols. Every one of them is working with Axelar behind the scenes. I do mean every single protocol I talk to is working with Axelar in some way. And I thought that was quite interesting, that\u2019s pretty high praise.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He contrasted Axelar\u2019s behind-the-scenes interoperability functionality with earlier high-visibility projects like Polkadot (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/polkadot\/\">DOT<\/a>), noting that Axelar appears to be executing more effectively in practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This forward-looking approach extends to the firm\u2019s views on the broader ETF landscape. Canary is also the first issuer to file for a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/sui\/\">Sui<\/a> ETF, the 18th-largest crypto by market cap and the 8th-largest blockchain by total value locked in decentralized applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClurg criticized a common reactive strategy among ETF issuers, which tends to follow trends already underway. He said that Canary\u2019s model instead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focuses on early identification of demand and the development of products in anticipation of shifting investor focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Incorporating NFTs into ETF structures<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canary also filed for an ETF tied to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/pudgy-penguins\/\">Pudgy Penguins<\/a> NFT collection. While McClurg declined to elaborate on that filing, he offered context around the company\u2019s thinking on NFT-based investment products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He emphasized his background in intellectual property investing, ranging from fine art to entertainment rights, and the shift in regulatory stance that opened the door for tokenized digital collectibles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following public statements from SEC officials indicating that NFTs and memecoins are not to be classified as securities, Canary saw a viable path to introduce NFT-based ETFs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm chose Pudgy Penguins over other collections, such as Bored Apes or CryptoPunks, due to its IP expansion beyond digital ownership, including physical merchandise and media content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClurg stressed that while he has never personally held NFTs, Pudgy Penguins\u2019 structure made it a more viable brand from a liquidity and IP standpoint.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201c[Pudgy Penguins have] done a better job of developing their brand and IP.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that this expansion into retail and animation supports the asset\u2019s inclusion in a regulated investment vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Timeline for approval<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the co-founder of asset manager <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/valkyrie\/\">Valkyrie<\/a>, McClurg worked on the firm\u2019s Bitcoin ETF, which was approved later than expected.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said the experience has made him cautious about the timeline for altcoin ETFs and he is hesitant to make a firm prediction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, McClurg said he wouldn\u2019t be surprised if up to four single-token altcoin ETFs are approved this year considering the improving regulatory landscape under the SEC\u2019s new leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He concluded:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think a lot of them will probably be approved next year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/canary-ceo-says-firms-unconventional-altcoin-etfs-are-bet-on-emerging-overlooked-tokens\/\">Canary CEO says firm\u2019s unconventional altcoin ETFs are bet on emerging, overlooked tokens<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/\">CryptoSlate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canary Capital CEO Steven McClurg said the firm\u2019s recent \u201cout-of-the-box\u201d crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) filings are a calculated approach to engage with assets that have potential and unmet demand.
