What happens if you build the second-largest stablecoin in the world, with over $60B in market cap \u2013 but someone else earns most of the profits?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s exactly the situation that Circle finds itself in with $USDC.<\/p>\n

But while it\u2019s a bit awkward for Circle, $USDC\u2019s success highlights a major crypto win, setting the stage for other new crypto<\/a> to explode as the year progresses.<\/p>\n

Coinbase Earns Majority of the Revenue Share from $USDC Reserves<\/h2>\n

A recent filing has unveiled that Coinbase Global receives 50% of the residual revenue generated from the reserves backing Circle\u2019s $USDC stablecoin.<\/p>\n

This revenue-sharing agreement is influenced by the amount of $USDC held on Coinbase\u2019s exchange, directly impacting Coinbase\u2019s share of Circle\u2019s reserve income.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great deal for Coinbase, which made $908M off $USDC in 2024 and is one of the linchpins of the crypto economy with its established and upcoming token listings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not a one-off for the exchange:<\/p>\n

Instead, it\u2019s part of a pretty decent business model for one of the world\u2019s biggest crypto exchanges. In 2024, Coinbase reported net income of $4.68 per share<\/a>; $COIN currently trades at $174 per share.<\/p>\n

The deal works out pretty well for Circle too. The company made $155M in net profit in 2024, and was the first stablecoin to be approved in Japan.<\/p>\n

With that $155M net coming off total revenue of $1.67B, Circle is ready to go public.<\/p>\n

No April Fools: Circling an IPO Date<\/h2>\n

Reports indicate a substantial minting of 250M $USDC at the USDC Treasury<\/a>, signaling increased demand for the stablecoin.<\/p>\n

Large-scale minting events often indicate heightened trading activity, growth in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, or increased institutional adoption within the cryptocurrency market.<\/p>\n

In this case, the minting might be related to the big news that Circle filed on April 1, 2025 with the SEC<\/a> to go public on the NYSE with the sticker CRCL.<\/p>\n

With that move, Circle joins other big crypto names like Kraken and BitGo in pursuing public listing under an increasingly-friendly crypto regime.<\/p>\n

Circle\u2019s $USDC is making moves in other ways also. Sony just announced that the company will support $USDC purchases online in Singapore. Facilitated by Crypto.com\u2019s payment system, the move is a big win for Circle and USDC as the company\u2019s first local move into direct crypto payments.<\/p>\n
