After stealing an initial sum through the <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/victim-of-a-crypto-scam-heres-what-to-do-next\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">investment scam<\/a>, the fraudsters contacted victims twice more, masquerading as investment managers and then as authorities, offering to recover the stolen funds for a fee, Spanish police <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.policia.es\/_es\/comunicacion_prensa_detalle.php?ID=16521#\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">said<\/a> in an April 7 statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/how-ai-and-deepfakes-are-fueling-new-cryptocurrency-scams\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">scammers used deepfake ads<\/a> of \u201cnational personalities\u201d promising high returns on crypto investments, and would occasionally pose as financial advisers or even feign romantic interest to lure in victims.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Experts have been warning of a rise in AI-enhanced scams. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said in its Feb. 13 Crypto Scam Revenue 2024 report that\u00a0<a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/how-ai-and-deepfakes-are-fueling-new-cryptocurrency-scams\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">generative AI<\/a>\u00a0is making \u201cscams more scalable and affordable for bad actors to conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea9Detenidas seis personas por estafar m\u00e1s de 19 millones de euros usando <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/inteligenciaartificial?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#inteligenciaartificial<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd34Enga\u00f1aban a las v\u00edctimas a trav\u00e9s de anuncios manipulados con <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IA<\/a> para que realizaran inversiones con <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/criptomonedas?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#criptomonedas<\/a> en productos supuestamente muy rentables <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rMrdgBpOYz\">pic.twitter.com\/rMrdgBpOYz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Polic\u00eda Nacional (@policia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/policia\/status\/1909150029849178562?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictims were not selected randomly; instead, algorithms selected those whose profiles matched the cybercriminals\u2019 searches,\u201d Spanish police said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce they selected their victims, they placed advertising campaigns on the websites or social networks they used, offering them cryptocurrency investments with high returns and zero risk of asset loss \u2014 investments that, obviously, turned out to be a scam.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When victims could not withdraw the funds, most realized it was a scam, according to Spanish police; however, the ruse didn\u2019t end there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Scammers would trick victims again with follow-up scams<\/h2>\n<p>The cybercriminals would then contact victims again, <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/impersonators-on-the-rise-in-web3-heres-how-to-stay-safe-from-scammers\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">posing as investment managers<\/a>, claiming the stolen funds were frozen and could be recovered if they paid a deposit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victims, hoping to finally recover their money, made the deposit without realizing they had been scammed again,\u201d Spanish police said.<\/p>\n<p>The scammers would then contact victims a third time, this time posing as Europol agents or lawyers from the United Kingdom, offering to return the stolen funds if the victim paid the corresponding taxes in the country where it was blocked.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/crypto-broker-escapes-kidnappers-breaks-ankles-while-fleeing-spain-report\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>Crypto broker breaks ankles while fleeing kidnappers in Spain<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spanish authorities arrested six people involved in the syndicate, charging them with fraud, money laundering and falsifying documents in a criminal organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a raid on the alleged leader behind the scam, Spanish authorities seized numerous cell phones, computers, hard drives, a simulated weapon and extensive documentation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several people linked to the plot have also been <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/global-crackdown-crypto-scams-ai-deepfake-fraud\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">identified in other countries<\/a>, and the syndicate allegedly created a large number of fake companies to channel the stolen funds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, the members of the organization used multiple false identities.
