Legislative efforts to introduce state-level Bitcoin reserves are gaining momentum in the United States, with <\/span>both<\/span> New Hampshire and Florida advancing bills <\/span>aimed at allowing<\/span> their respective governments to hold Bitcoin as part of their financial reserves.<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 10, New Hampshire\u2019s House <\/span>passed bill HB302<\/span><\/a> in a narrow 192-179 vote. The legislation now moves to the state Senate for further debate. <\/span><\/p>\n

If approved and signed into law <\/span>by Governor Kelly Ayotte<\/span>, the bill would authorize the state treasurer to allocate up to 10% of New Hampshire\u2019s general fund and other approved state funds into investments in precious metals and digital assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bitcoin Stands Alone as Only Eligible Asset Under $500B Market Cap Rule<\/span><\/h2>\n

The bill restricts investments to cryptocurrencies with a market capitalization exceeding $500 billion. At present, Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that meets that threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill also outlines guidelines for how such assets should be securely custodied. However, the proposal sparked debate. Democratic Representative Terry Spahr opposed the measure, noting that the state treasurer already has the authority to invest in alternative assets. <\/span><\/p>\n

He also raised concerns about locking the state into specific asset classes amid a volatile and fast-changing crypto landscape. In contrast, Republican Representative Jordan Ulery argued the bill could help the state earn significant returns through strategic crypto investments.<\/span><\/p>\n

New Hampshire is now the fourth state to have passed a Bitcoin reserve bill through at least one legislative chamber, joining Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma. <\/span><\/p>\n
