In a conversation recorded in Tokyo with host Sarah Yun for Humans by Socious, Charles Hoskinson\u2014founder of the Cardano blockchain\u2014discussed the network\u2019s roadmap, its community-driven governance, and the methodical research underpinning its technology. While the talk<\/a> largely covered Hoskinson\u2019s background and Cardano\u2019s development journey, it also offered insight into why he sees Bitcoin\u2019s liquidity and decentralized finance as a powerful combination for the industry\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

Cardano Founder Says Bitcoin DeFi Is The Future<\/h2>\n

A recurring theme in Hoskinson\u2019s remarks was Cardano\u2019s on-chain treasury system, which he contrasted with other major blockchains: \u201cAt the end of the day, we have a $1.5 billion treasury<\/a> for everybody to use and\u2026if you hold Bitcoin, you don\u2019t have this; if you hold Ether or Solana, you don\u2019t have this. But we have this and\u2026we have an on-chain governance\u2026 The technology is sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

He argued that these features make Cardano \u201cthe strongest of the cryptocurrencies,\u201d in large part because the protocol allows its community to propose, vote on, and finance improvements without relying on centralized oversight. \u201cMost ecosystems have struggles behind closed doors in private. We have the courage and mandate to be open about the problems we have<\/a>. Because of that we\u2019re stronger,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n

Hoskinson acknowledged that Cardano\u2019s development process took longer than anticipated, owing to the project\u2019s emphasis on peer-reviewed research and formal methods: \u201cI overestimated how hard it would be to write academic papers\u2026and I underestimated the engineering complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite these delays, he believes this rigorous approach gave Cardano a robust scientific foundation. Over the years, the blockchain has adopted an \u201cextended UTXO\u201d model\u2014an adaptation of Bitcoin\u2019s transaction structure but with added flexibility for more advanced smart contracts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith our partnership with BitVMX FORCE, we\u2019re enabling Aiken, Plutus, and other languages to write Bitcoin smart contracts and Cardano smart contracts. We have all the off-chain infrastructure figured out,\u201d Hoskinson added.<\/p>\n

Not Ethereum Or Solana<\/h2>\n

On multiple occasions, Hoskinson stressed that Cardano\u2019s evolution is guided by an engaged worldwide community. He contrasted the network\u2019s decentralized governance with conventional corporate decision-making and suggested it provides a more sustainable model: \u201cWe know our problems, and we know how to fix our problems in a finite period of time\u201412, 24 months, [and] the vast majority will be completely resolved. We\u2019re not going anywhere\u2026 It\u2019s not like the chain is going to be worthless \u2026 The culture is our greatest strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Hoskinson, Bitcoin\u2019s liquidity with Cardano\u2019s framework forms the subtext for his bold claim that \u201cBitcoin DeFi is the largest market opportunity of our lives.\u201d Throughout the interview, he emphasized that Cardano\u2019s deliberate design choices\u2014such as rigorous engineering, formal governance, and the extended UTXO model\u2014position the network to integrate wider financial use cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cBitcoin DeFi<\/a>, the largest market opportunity of our lives, will be when BTC starts talking to other chains. They\u2019ve only pulled this lever just a little bit with Stacks, Babylon, and others. There\u2019s already $5.8B in TVL,\u201d Hoskinson explained, and added that \u201cCardano is the best system in the entire world to enable Bitcoin DeFi. Not Solana, not Ethereum, because we\u2019re EUTXO. The way we\u2019re designed, when you\u2019re a Bitcoin developer, you instantly understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n
