The Ethereum Foundation has initiated a leadership realignment designed to unshackle Vitalik Buterin from routine coordination and crisis triage, allowing the network\u2019s co\u2011founder to devote his time almost exclusively to deep\u2011cycle research. The shift was disclosed by Tomasz K. Sta\u0144czak, recently appointed Co\u2011Executive Director of the Foundation, in a post<\/a> on X that outlines an aggressive acceleration of Ethereum\u2019s technical roadmap.<\/p>\n

Ethereum Foundation Reshapes Leadership<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur discussions about the Layer 1 scaling roadmap have been extensive, and the feedback so far suggests that the community appreciates our ambition,\u201d Sta\u0144czak wrote. \u201cTurning that ambition into reality now depends on the focus of the core development teams and researchers.\u201d He added that, following the \u201crecent changes in leadership at the Ethereum Foundation, we aimed, among other things, to free more of Vitalik\u2019s time for research and exploration, rather than day\u2011to\u2011day coordination or crisis response.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sta\u0144czak emphasized that Buterin\u2019s voice will \u201calways carry weight,\u201d but that his proposals are meant to \u201cstart conversations and encourage progress in difficult research areas,\u201d subject to rigorous community review. \u201cEach time Vitalik shares insights or communicates a direction, he accelerates major long\u2011term breakthroughs,\u201d he noted, citing Buterin\u2019s recent essays on RISC\u2011V\u2013based virtual machines and zero\u2011knowledge execution environments, as well as his writings on privacy, which Sta\u0144czak said have \u201chelped realign the community around the Ethereum Foundation\u2019s core values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under Sta\u0144czak\u2019s stewardship, the Foundation is concentrating near\u2011term research firepower on Layer 1 scaling, Layer 2 support, and thorny user\u2011experience issues\u2014including interoperability\u2014within the upcoming Pectra<\/a>, Fusaka and Glamsterdam protocol upgrades. \u201cWithin the EF we will shift much of our research effort toward near\u2011term goals, aiming to address user experience and scaling challenges in the next two protocol upgrades,\u201d he wrote. In parallel, teams are \u201cexploring ways to bring forward projects that currently look three to five years away,\u201d citing next\u2011generation execution and consensus layers as targets that could be compressed into a one\u2011 to two\u2011year horizon.<\/p>\n

Buterin\u2019s most headline\u2011grabbing recent idea<\/a>\u2014replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine with a RISC\u2011V architecture\u2014illustrates the latitude he will now enjoy. The proposal envisions rebuilding the platform\u2019s execution layer atop the open\u2011hardware instruction set, an overhaul that he argues could deliver \u201csignificant efficiency gains, potentially up to 100 percent,\u201d in transaction processing and smart\u2011contract execution. While still early\u2011stage and subject to the Foundation\u2019s culture of rigorous vetting, the plan aligns with Ethereum\u2019s intensified focus on raw Layer 1 throughput even as Layer 2 ecosystems mature in parallel.<\/p>\n

The leadership recalibration<\/a> also aims to embolden other senior researchers. Sta\u0144czak singled out Justin Drake and Dankrad Feist, urging the community to grant them the same latitude Buterin enjoys to publish exploratory ideas that may later be refined\u2014or rejected\u2014through open review. \u201cEthereum researchers often ask that readers recognize the exploratory nature of their posts and proposals,\u201d he wrote, underscoring the Foundation\u2019s conviction that high\u2011risk inquiry is a prerequisite for breakthroughs.<\/p>\n
