In his latest ask-me-anything session streamed on April 23, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson delivered a sweeping critique of Ethereum\u2019s long-term prospects, arguing that the world\u2019s second-largest smart-contract platform is encumbered by what he called three \u201cself-inflicted wounds\u201d and lacks the on-chain governance needed to heal them.<\/p>\n

Ethereum Faces 15-Year Deadline: Cardano Founder<\/h2>\n

Responding to an audience question\u2014\u201cIf you were running the Ethereum Foundation, what would you do differently?\u201d\u2014Hoskinson said<\/a> the project chose \u201cthe wrong accounting model, the wrong virtual machine, and the wrong consensus model,\u201d a triad of design decisions he believes now threaten Ethereum\u2019s survival. \u201cPeople told them not to do it, they did it, and they got where they needed to go,\u201d he said, before warning that the fixes adopted so far \u201cput in all these weird slashing economics and layer twos and other things,\u201d whose unintended consequences are starting to bite.<\/p>\n

Hoskinson, who co-founded Ethereum in 2014 before leaving to launch Cardano two years later, insisted that a viable turnaround would require parallel workstreams. \u201cFirst off, you have to solve your technological problems,\u201d he said, pointing to Ethereum\u2019s proof-of-stake implementation as something the network \u201cneeds to wean itself off of.\u201d<\/p>\n

He suggested a shift to what he called a \u201ctelescoping protocol design\u201d such as Ouroboros-Leios\u2014Cardano\u2019s forthcoming upgrade path\u2014and urged Ethereum developers to look at the \u201cobject model of SWE,\u201d along with Narwhal-and-Tusk-style consensus, and a move to the RISC-V instruction set. \u201cSomething like RISC-V<\/a> with intent, with an object model like SWE, probably would fit their ecosystem quite well,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n

Yet the bigger obstacle, in Hoskinson\u2019s view, is Ethereum\u2019s lack of formalized self-governance. \u201cThey really don\u2019t have a good on-chain governance system,\u201d he said. Building one, he estimates, would take \u201cfive to seven years\u201d given the network\u2019s size and entrenched stakeholders. Without it, he warned, protocol upgrades and community coordination will remain fragile.<\/p>\n

Hoskinson\u2019s most pointed forecast came midway through the session: \u201cI don\u2019t think Ethereum will survive more than 10 years to 15 years.\u201d He predicted that layer-2 networks will continue to \u201csuckle out all of the alpha,\u201d eroding the base chain\u2019s utility while sparking internal conflict that will grow \u201charder and harder for Vitalik to be able to hold [\u2026] together through sheer force of will.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also contended that a revitalized Bitcoin ecosystem by Cardano\u2019s efforts and faster monolithic chains could outcompete Ethereum on both liquidity and user experience. \u201cOnce [Bitcoin DeFi<\/a>] turns on, the TVL will be larger than Ethereum [\u2026] and the other thing is they\u2019re being eaten alive by Solana and SUI and these other things,\u201d he said, likening Ethereum\u2019s predicament to companies such as MySpace and BlackBerry that struggled to pivot when \u201cfundamentally different paradigms [\u2026] creep up on you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoskinson also contrasted Ethereum\u2019s roadmap with Cardano\u2019s own. He highlighted Cardano\u2019s RISC-V-based virtual machine, its extended UTXO accounting, and its \u201cnon-parasitic\u201d approach to layer-2 scaling\u2014namely Hydra<\/a> and the Midnight sidechain<\/a>\u2014as evidence that Cardano already embodies the architectural decisions he is urging Ethereum to adopt.<\/p>\n

Hoskinson conceded that some of Cardano\u2019s governance tooling is \u201ckind of weird now,\u201d but maintained it will be \u201cawesome in three to five years.\u201d By contrast, he warned, Ethereum\u2019s transition would be slower and more contentious, giving alternative platforms time to attract developers and liquidity. \u201cUsers will gradually migrate to other places and then they\u2019re gonna get eclipsed by Bitcoin DeFi,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The remarks come at a sensitive moment for Ethereum, which completed its proof-of-stake merge 18 months ago and is preparing for upgrades aimed at lowering transaction costs and boosting throughput. Hoskinson\u2019s comments are unlikely to sway Ethereum\u2019s core developers, but they underscore a growing debate over whether modular, rollup-centric roadmaps can maintain network coherence as competing ecosystems evolve.<\/p>\n

Asked to sum up his outlook, Hoskinson reverted to first principles. \u201cA brilliant project,\u201d he said of Ethereum, \u201cit\u2019s just [a] victim of its own success.\u201d Without decisive architectural and governance reforms, he concluded, the platform risks \u201ca very hostile divorce\u201d between the base layer and its scaling solutions and, ultimately, obsolescence within the coming decade.<\/p>\n
