Coinbase also plans to use its platform to offer PYUSD to PayPal\u2019s extensive network of merchant partners, which could ease the use of stablecoins in everyday transactions.<\/p>\n<h4>Stablecoin rivalry heats up<\/h4>\n<p>Stablecoins \u2014 digital tokens pegged to traditional currencies, predominantly the dollar \u2014 are one of the fastest-growing sectors in crypto. They are marketed as a faster and cheaper alternative to legacy payment systems, and are increasingly popular for payments across borders. Standard Chartered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2025\/04\/15\/stablecoin-market-could-grow-to-usd2t-by-end-2028-standard-chartered\">projected<\/a> the sector to grow to $2 trillion by 2028 from the current $220 billion.<\/p>\n<p>With regulation for stablecoins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/04\/02\/u-s-house-committee-advances-stablecoin-bill-while-dems-warn-of-trump-conflicts\">advancing<\/a> in the U.S., the competition is heating up among issuers while banks and traditional payment firms are also eyeing the market. Binance, the largest crypto exchange, and Circle, issuer of the second largest dollar-backed stablecoin, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2024\/12\/10\/binance-partners-with-circle-to-push-usdc-stablecoin-adoption-across-the-globe\">already linked up<\/a> to use Circle&#8217;s USDC as a trading pair and <a href=\"https:\/\/merchant.binance.com\/en\/how-to-accept\/usdc\">payment method<\/a>. Circle introduced a remittances network this week.<\/p>\n<p>Market leader Tether, issuer of the $140 billion USDT, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/04\/07\/tether-may-develop-u-s-only-stablecoin-under-new-regulations-ft\">mulling<\/a> issuing a stablecoin designed for U.S. users.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, PayPal, whose stablecoin debuted in 2023 and has grown to $860 million, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2025\/04\/23\/paypal-to-pay-3-7-annual-yield-on-stablecoin-pyusd-to-encourage-broader-use\">introduced<\/a> a 3.7% annual yield on PYUSD for U.S. token holders to attract more users.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN) said it will introduce free conversions between PayPal\u2019s dollar-pegged stablecoin, PYUSD, and the U.S. currency in a move aimed at accelerating the shift toward on-chain payments.
