{"id":25320,"date":"2025-05-06T06:46:49","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T06:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=25320"},"modified":"2025-05-06T06:46:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T06:46:49","slug":"bitcoin-developers-plan-op_return-removal-in-next-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=25320","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin Developers Plan OP_RETURN Removal in Next Release"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The debate over Bitcoin&#8217;s OP_RETURN heats up, as developers of Bitcoin Core \u2013 the most popular node software \u2013 said they plan to scrap OP_RETURN entirely in the next release.<\/p>\n<p>The OP_RETURN limit is an 80-byte cap on the amount of arbitrary data that can be embedded in a Bitcoin transaction using a special, unspendable output field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLarge-data inscriptions are happening regardless and can be done in more or less abusive ways,\u201d said Core contributor and Engineer at Blockstream Greg Sanders, known as \u2018instagibbs,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/instagibbs\/c436110890ab25aa9997b13c2270d5ce\">in a post on Github<\/a> announcing the removal. \u201cThe cap merely channels them into more opaque forms that cause damage to the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/tech\/2025\/04\/30\/bitcoin-debate-on-looser-data-limits-brings-to-mind-the-divisive-ordinals-controversy\">The debate centered<\/a> on whether lifting the 80-byte OP_RETURN limit promotes transparency and simplifies data use on Bitcoin, or whether it opens the door to abuse, spam, and a shift away from Bitcoin\u2019s financial focus.<\/p>\n<p>On Github, Sanders added that enforcing the cap has created perverse incentives pushing users to embed data in fake public keys or spendable scripts. Removing the limit, he argues, \u201cyields at least two tangible benefits: a cleaner UTXO set and more consistent default behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone is convinced. Core developer Luke Dashjr has long viewed inscriptions and other data storage as spam, and warned in April 2025 that this change was \u201cutter insanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid the controversy, Bitcoin Knots, maintained by former Core developer Luke Dashjr, has seen growing adoption, hitting approximately 5% share of all nodes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/s3y3vcno\/production\/da4ef9d5533b32a545f19ab41cad03ac6f897f1c-491x509.png?auto=format\" alt=\"(bitcoin.clarkmoody.com)\" title=\"(bitcoin.clarkmoody.com)\"><\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin Knots, a more customizable fork of Bitcoin Core, appeals to users seeking greater control over what their nodes relay or store, including allowing users to reject non-payment transactions like inscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Some prominent thought leaders in the industry, like Samson Mow, are encouraging node operators not to upgrade their version of Bitcoin Core, or use Knots instead.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders defended the removal of the cap as aligned with Bitcoin\u2019s ethos: minimal, transparent rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy retiring a deterrent that no longer deters,\u201d he wrote, \u201cBitcoin Core lets the fee market arbitrate competing demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that isn&#8217;t bringing much consensus. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis marks a fundamental shift in the direction of Bitcoin,\u201d one commenter warned on GitHub.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the largest mistake Core can make at this juncture,&#8221; another on Github added. \u201cI want to be on the record saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The debate over Bitcoin&#8217;s OP_RETURN heats up, as developers of Bitcoin Core \u2013 the most popular node software \u2013 said they plan to scrap OP_RETURN entirely in the next release.
