At the heart of DeFi innovation, 1inch has built one of the most popular decentralized exchange aggregators in the space.<\/p>\n

At Paris Blockchain Week 2025, we sat down with Aleksandra \u201cSasha\u201d Fetisova, Head of Business Development at 1inch, to understand what\u2019s next: for 1inch, DeFi, and the industry, in general.<\/p>\n

Sasha revealed the latest upgrades, challenges in the ecosystem, and the trends she believes will reshape DeFi over the next few years.<\/p>\n

Reinventing the Swap Experience<\/h3>\n

For those unfamiliar, 1inch doesn\u2019t operate like a traditional DEX \u2014 it\u2019s a DEX aggregator. Instead of providing a standalone marketplace, it scans hundreds of decentralized exchanges to deliver the best possible rates to its users.<\/p>\n

Recent updates, Sasha explained, have pushed this even further.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe improved our swap experience with an intent-based, cross-chain gasless solution called Fusion,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s interoperable across EVM chains, doesn\u2019t rely on third-party bridges, and is protected against MEV [maximum extractable value] attacks. It\u2019s all about making swaps faster, cheaper, and safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For regular users, this means lower friction and lower cost, particularly when moving assets across chains \u2014 a pain point that\u2019s long plagued decentralized finance.<\/p>\n

Fees are a sensitive topic in crypto, where gas costs and platform cuts can quietly drain portfolios.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cOur users can be sure they\u2019re doing direct swaps without any added fees,\u201d Sasha emphasized. \u201cWe\u2019re a community-driven project, and we don\u2019t charge users on our DApp or mobile wallet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Behind the scenes, she credits the project\u2019s developers for optimizing routing and smart contracts to keep swaps efficient and cheap. But that\u2019s not the only factor:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe aggregate liquidity from over 500 DEXs across 10 to 13 chains,\u201d she said. \u201cPlus, in Fusion mode, we work with professional market makers \u2014 resolvers \u2014 who pull liquidity not just from decentralized sources but also from centralized exchanges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Security Through Minimalism<\/h3>\n

One feature of 1inch\u2019s approach is its laser focus on security.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve never been hacked,\u201d Sasha stated firmly. \u201cThat\u2019s because we do at least five to ten audits every time we update or launch something new.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But it\u2019s not just audits. She pointed to co-founder and CTO Anton Bukov\u2019s philosophy of writing minimal, highly efficient smart contracts.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of creating bloated, complex code, Anton spends hours thinking and then writes a small, functional piece of code \u2014 something that can be audited quickly and runs efficiently,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a very intentional design.\u201d<\/p>\n

Going Global: From Decentralized Team to Dubai Hub<\/h3>\n

Although 1inch was born during the remote-work explosion of COVID, the team recently opened its first physical office in Dubai.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe see the IMEA region as very fruitful, especially under current market conditions,\u201d Sasha shared. \u201cIf our community is traveling to Dubai, we\u2019re happy to show them around!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She hinted that Dubai\u2019s choice aligns with favorable conditions for crypto innovation.<\/p>\n

Looking beyond 1inch\u2019s immediate roadmap, Sasha reflected on the broader trends shaping DeFi.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn the next cycle, we\u2019ll see more institutions entering DeFi,\u201d she predicted. \u201cWe\u2019re already seeing centralized exchanges like Binance and OKX launching Web3 wallets, and even banks \u2014 like Societe Generale with its FORGE platform \u2014 exploring DeFi integrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the more chaotic side of the market, she acknowledged the rise of meme coins.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Trump launched his meme coin, it brought in a lot of new users, but many of them got wrecked,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d love to see some kind of education or maybe even system notifications warning people that meme coins are meme coins \u2014 they\u2019re not guaranteed wealth machines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Real-World Assets and AI: The Next Frontiers<\/h3>\n

Sasha is particularly excited about the tokenization of real-world assets.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI met someone who tokenized mangoes for an African central bank \u2014 can you imagine?\u201d she said, laughing. \u201cWe\u2019re going to see more real estate tokenization, hedge fund tokenization\u2026 These are the trends that could bring the first billion users into crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And what about onboarding those billions?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need AI agents,\u201d Sasha asserted. \u201cImagine an AI assistant in the 1inch wallet that guides new users, answers their questions, and helps them navigate features. I can only help maybe 100 people a day; an AI agent can help thousands, 24\/7.\u201d<\/p>\n

Towards the end of April, 1inch had a major announcement: its expansion to Solana.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not just EVM-compatible anymore; we\u2019re expanding to Layer 1s, and we invite users to guess which chains are coming next.\u201d<\/p>\n
