Sygnum, the Swiss- and Singapore-regulated digital-asset banking group, has ignited fresh debate over the pecking order of smart-contract platforms with the publication of its 8 May \u201cDigital Nugget\u201d commentary, pointedly titled Is Solana overtaking Ethereum?<\/p>\n

Solana Vs. Ethereum<\/h2>\n

In the report<\/a>, Sygnum\u2019s research desk acknowledges that Ethereum retains an \u201cundisputed\u201d lead in revenues and institutional adoption, yet concludes that the market narrative has swung decisively in Solana\u2019s favour\u2014a reversal dramatic enough for the bank to describe Solana as the system currently \u201covertaking\u201d its older rival in mind-share if not in absolute fundamentals.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthereum\u2019s strategic pivot [\u2026] has led to a 5\u201310 percent outperformance of Ether over Solana,\u201d the note observes, citing the chain\u2019s refocused roadmap on main-net scalability and user-experience. Nonetheless, the authors concede that \u201csentiment on Ethereum remains poor for now\u201d despite its \u201ccontinued leading position and still superior revenue generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sygnum\u2019s analysts dissect the often-conflated metrics of fees, revenues and token value. While Solana has recently \u201cdominated in fee generation,\u201d its protocol income \u201ccontinues to substantially lag Ethereum (with the exception of the brief period around the issuance of the Trump family tokens<\/a> on Solana).\u201d The bank quantifies the gap at roughly two- to two-and-a-half-times in favour of ETH\u2014an edge that endures even after Solana\u2019s frenetic surge in retail transaction volumes.<\/p>\n

Layer-2 dynamics<\/a> on Ethereum, long criticised for siphoning activity away from the main chain, receive a balanced treatment. The report reiterates that rollups have \u201cled the market to see Ether as less valuable,\u201d but adds a little-noticed parallel: \u201ca comparable issue affecting the value of the Solana tokens is overlooked.\u201d Because \u201cmost of the fees are paid to validators and do not grow the value of the Solana token,\u201d Solana\u2019s own monetary premium may be equally vulnerable.<\/p>\n

Token-economic self-help is not on the immediate horizon: a community proposal to tweak Solana\u2019s inflation schedule\u2014an initiative Sygnum says \u201cwould have had a similar effect\u201d to ETH\u2019s fee-burn mechanic\u2014\u201cwas conclusively voted down recently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Market capitalisation paints a different picture of runway. With Solana valued at roughly one-third of Ether but already generating half its revenues, Sygnum calculates \u201cmore room for Solana to outperform \u2013 especially with the tailwind of a better narrative and sentiment.\u201d Even so, the report cautions that Solana\u2019s income stream is \u201chighly concentrated in the memecoin sector\u201d and hence judged by investors as \u201cless stable.\u201d The implication: valuation discounts may be rational rather than sentimental.<\/p>\n

By The Numbers<\/h2>\n

Ethereum\u2019s entrenchment among regulated institutions provides the counter-weight. \u201cTokenisation, stablecoins, and DeFi\u201d are the use-cases \u201cshowing traction and have the support of governments, regulators, and traditional financial institutions,\u201d Sygnum writes, noting Ethereum\u2019s 57% share of tokenised assets\u2014augmented by a further 20% on its Layer-2 cohort zkSync. BlackRock\u2019s flagship BUIDL<\/a> fund, for example, keeps \u201c93% of its assets on Ethereum,\u201d a decision the asset manager links to the network\u2019s \u201cdecentralization, credibility and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

By contrast, Solana\u2019s slice of the tokenisation pie \u201cremains below 3%,\u201d and its year-to-date doubling of stablecoin share leaves it \u201cjust above 5%,\u201d still an order of magnitude behind Ethereum. The area where Solana has moved the needle most convincingly is DeFi total value locked: its share has climbed from 9.5% to 11.5% against Ethereum\u2019s slide from 63.5% to 55% since January.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe narratives continue to strongly favour Solana,\u201d Sygnum concedes, even after Ethereum Foundation\u2019s internal reshuffle<\/a> and public vow to \u201cadjust its go-to-market strategy and to clarify and articulate the value proposition.\u201d Yet narrative alone will not decide custody mandates or settlement rails for traditional finance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not yet see convincing signs that Solana would be the preferred choice as Ethereum\u2019s security, stability and longevity are highly prized,\u201d the bank concludes, reminding readers that network effects in crypto \u201care very hard to overcome \u2013 just as they are in other tech fields such as social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, history\u2019s roll-call of \u201cEthereum killers\u201d is a cautionary tale: \u201cmost have faded away until now,\u201d despite technological ingenuity. Against that backdrop, the report\u2019s summary is both sober and striking: \u201cEthereum\u2019s 2-year long underperformance vs Solana has been temporarily arrested since the strategic pivot\u2026 [and] the token value continues to be supported by revenues running at double the rate of Solana\u2019s revenues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sygnum\u2019s analysis stops short of declaring an irreversible power shift, but its framing is unambiguous: in the current news cycle Solana enjoys the upper hand in perception, whereas ETH retains the upper hand in fundamentals. Whether that juxtaposition amounts to Solana \u201covertaking\u201d Ethereum or merely drafting in its slipstream will depend, the bank says, on which chain wins the confidence of global finance in the \u201cmedium-term.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, as Sygnum delicately puts it, \u201cthe market has focused on Solana\u2019s greater transaction volumes,\u201d even if \u201cprotocol revenues continue to substantially lag Ethereum.\u201d In the scorecard of May 2025, Solana may claim the crowd, yet Ethereum still holds the belt.<\/p>\n
