{"id":27001,"date":"2025-05-15T16:46:56","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T16:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=27001"},"modified":"2025-05-15T16:46:56","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T16:46:56","slug":"kevin-oleary-i-want-more-regulation-and-i-want-it-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=27001","title":{"rendered":"Kevin O\u2019Leary: &#8216;I Want More Regulation, And I Want It Now&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Kevin O\u2019Leary, chairman of O\u2019Leary Ventures, said the crypto industry isn\u2019t regulated enough \u2014 which is holding digital assets back from true institutional adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Consensus 2025 in Toronto on Thursday, O\u2019Leary said crypto assets under management (AUM) have hit a wall, which he attributed to a lack of regulatory clarity that has prevented the majority of sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and institutional investors from investing meaningfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought I\u2019d say this, but I want more regulation and I want it now,\u201d O\u2019Leary said. \u201cThe good news is there\u2019s a new sheriff in town: Paul Atkins at the [U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Leary said Atkins, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/04\/22\/crypto-ally-paul-atkins-sworn-in-to-replace-gary-gensler-atop-u-s-sec\">sworn in as chairman<\/a> of the SEC last month, has already telegraphed that he\u2019s friendly to the crypto industry and will \u201cregulate accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Atkins replaces Gary Gensler, whose penchant for so-called \u201cregulation by enforcement\u201d drew the ire of many in the crypto industry. O\u2019Leary said Thursday that he respected Gensler\u2019s consistency as a regulator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he was gonna sue you, and he sued you,\u201d O\u2019Leary said. \u201cHe was consistent and you have to respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a press conference ahead of his keynote speech, O\u2019Leary said he&#8217;d received a Wells notice from the SEC over a decade ago after speaking about debt tokenization in a televised interview. He was cleared, he said, but the experience temporarily scared him off engaging with crypto in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first experience with crypto was over a decade ago, when I was on business cable, talking about debt tokenization,\u201d O\u2019Leary said. \u201cI get a knock on my door and it\u2019s an enforcement agent from the SEC serving me a Wells notice. I shit my pants \u2026 The regulator was sending a message. I got the message\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Gensler departed the agency in January, the SEC has done an about-face on its approach to crypto regulation, creating a Crypto Task Force spearheaded by crypto-friendly Commissioner Hester Peirce and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/03\/29\/where-all-the-sec-cases-are\">dropping a host of open investigations<\/a> and lawsuits against crypto companies that were started under Gensler.<\/p>\n<p>A friendlier SEC isn\u2019t the only thing O\u2019Leary is hopeful for when it comes to crypto regulation \u2014\u00a0he expects to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/05\/15\/u-s-senate-s-stablecoin-push-still-alive-as-bill-may-return-to-floor-sources\">passage of the GENIUS<\/a> Act within \u201cmonths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe minute that happens, it will signal the move to the next act, the market infrastructure act,\u201d O\u2019Leary said. \u201cAnd when that is determined and regulated, Katy, bar the doors \u2014\u00a0a trillion dollars will come in and index [bitcoin].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin O\u2019Leary, chairman of O\u2019Leary Ventures, said the crypto industry isn\u2019t regulated enough \u2014 which is holding digital assets back from true institutional adoption.
