Panama City\u2019s mayor stirred up talk this week when he hinted at building a city\u2011level Bitcoin fund<\/a>. It all started with a single line on social media.<\/p>\n

Mayer\u202fMizrachi wrote \u201cBitcoin Reserve\u201d<\/a> on X on May\u202f16. He\u2019d just met with Max\u202fKeiser and Stacy\u202fHerbert, two of the big names behind El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin moves.<\/p>\n

Meeting Sparks Curious Talk<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to local sources, Mizrachi sat down with Keiser and Herbert to go over the nuts and bolts of Bitcoin policy. The mayor was tight\u2011lipped about details.<\/p>\n

But the timing was notable. He shared that post just before heading to the Bitcoin\u202f2025 conference in Las Vegas. It seemed like a heads\u2011up that something more could be coming.<\/p>\n

Legal Hurdles Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Based on reports, creating a formal Bitcoin reserve would need a vote in Panama\u2019s National Assembly. Lawmakers would have to write and approve a bill first. That process can drag on.<\/p>\n

Committees must study the idea. There\u2019d be debates, amendments and budget checks. Only then could the city hold any stash of Bitcoin on its books.<\/p>\n

Energy Plans Discussed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Energy was also on the table. Keiser pointed out Panama\u2019s hydroelectric potential and El Salvador<\/a>\u2019s geothermal plants. He suggested that green energy could power Bitcoin mining rigs.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a neat idea: use cheap, clean power to run the computers that keep the Bitcoin network ticking. But permits and grid upgrades would be needed. Companies and regulators would have to sign off.<\/p>\n


\nCrypto Payments On The Horizon<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mizrachi has already said Panama City will accept Bitcoin, Ether, Tether and USDC once the payments system is ready. That means building the crypto\u2011to\u2011fiat rails. Banks or fintech partners must handle the exchange.<\/p>\n

And secure wallets would be needed to store any coins the city takes in. No launch date\u2019s been set. But the plan is on the agenda.<\/p>\n

Companies Bulk Up Holdings<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just governments eyeing Bitcoin. Public firms are piling in, too. Michael\u202fSaylor\u2019s Strategy<\/a> Corp. just said it would raise $84\u202fbillion to buy more Bitcoin. That includes selling another $21\u202fbillion in stock.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve also lifted their debt limit from $21\u202fbillion to $42\u202fbillion, with $14.6\u202fbillion still open. On the other side of the globe, Metaplanet<\/a> added 1,240\u202fBTC\u2014about 18.50 billion yen, or roughly $127\u202fmillion. That brings its total to 6,797\u202fBTC, now worth just over $706\u202fmillion.<\/p>\n

Based on reports, publicly listed firms increased their Bitcoin<\/a> stash by 15% in Q1. It shows that many see Bitcoin as a core holding\u2014not just a side bet.<\/p>\n
