Tether has just stepped into new territory. It\u2019s now the 19th\u2011largest owner of US government debt. That means more private money is parked in Treasuries than many big nations.<\/p>\n

Tether Surpasses Germany In Treasury Holdings<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to the Q1\u202f2025 attestation report<\/a>, Tether holds $120\u202fbillion in US Treasuries. Germany, by comparison, stands at $111.4\u202fbillion. This shift puts a stablecoin issuer ahead of a major sovereign investor. It also highlights how crypto firms are using plain\u2011vanilla bonds to back digital dollars.<\/p>\n

Rising Role In US Debt Market<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Based on reports from the US Department of the Treasury, Tether was the seventh\u2011largest buyer of US Treasuries in 2024. It outpaced Canada, Mexico, Taiwan and Norway. Short\u2011term paper has become a go\u2011to asset for issuers of dollar\u2011pegged tokens.<\/p>\n

Strong Returns In First Quarter<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Tether\u2019s own figures, the company booked over $1\u202fbillion in profits from conventional investments in Q1\u202f2025. Most of that came from its Treasury stash.<\/p>\n

Its gold holdings also played a part by softening swings in crypto markets. Taken together, these gains show that safe, liquid assets can still deliver while markets wobble. But they depend on borrowing costs staying low and deposit runs staying calm.<\/p>\n

Record USDT Growth And Usage<\/strong><\/p>\n

Based on reports, USDT\u2019s market cap<\/a> climbed past $150\u202fbillion for the first time ever. That\u2019s up by more than $11\u202fbillion this year. In the past 12 months, over 250\u202fmillion users completed 5.8\u202fbillion stablecoin transactions worth $33.6\u202ftrillion.<\/p>\n

Visa data suggests 192.2\u202fmillion addresses bought stablecoins and 242.7\u202fmillion received them. Citi forecasts stablecoins<\/a> could reach a $1.6\u202ftrillion value by 2030, and Standard Chartered sees them hitting $2\u202ftrillion by 2028.<\/p>\n

Tether is also branching out. It listed Tether Gold (XAU\u209c) on Maxbit, a licensed Thai exchange, on May\u202f13. That move follows Thailand\u2019s March\u202f2025 decision to allow trading of USD\u2011backed stablecoins without extra limits. Now, tokenized gold and USDT can flow more freely in Asia\u2019s emerging markets.<\/p>\n

Tether\u2019s climb into the top 20 of US debt holders reflects a wider trend. Stablecoin issuers are quietly buying up Treasuries, making them a key source of dollar liquidity. It adds stability to crypto\u2019s wild turns. Yet it also puts private players at the heart of one of the world\u2019s largest markets.<\/p>\n
