Binance co-founder and former CEO, Changpeng Zhao, has accused The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) of targeting him and the crypto industry, alleging that \u201cforces\u201d in the US are attempting to hinder the country\u2019s effort to develop the sector.<\/p>\n

CZ Denies \u2018Fixer\u2019 Claims<\/h2>\n

On Friday, Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, criticized The WSJ for another alleged anti-crypto \u201chit piece.\u201d The Binance co-founder took X to express his disappointment in the news media outlet for resorting to \u201cCunningham\u2019s Law, with negative intentions\u201d instead of \u201cdoing journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zhao explained that, a few days ago, The WSJ contacted him through the PR team, asking \u201ca long list of questions with wrong and negative assumptions.\u201d The questions<\/a> reportedly had \u201cnumerous inaccuracies and unfounded inferences\u201d that Zhao\u2019s team pointed out.<\/p>\n

The WSJ article alleged<\/a> that Zhao helped \u201cfacilitate\u201d some introductions for the Trump family\u2019s World Liberty Financial (WLFI) crypto venture\u2019s foreign travel, naming one of the company\u2019s co-founders, Zach Witkoff.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for WLFI affirmed that Zhao and Zach Witkoff are friends, but the Binance founder \u201cdoesn\u2019t act as a fixer.\u201d In response to these claims, CZ shared a snippet from the original questions sent to him, which affirmed that he was a \u201cfixer\u201d for the WLFI co-founder:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand that CZ has been serving as effectively a fixer for Zach Witkoff and the WLF team in their foreign travels \u2026 In recent months, CZ has met with government officials from Pakistan, Malaysia and Kyrgyzstan \u2026 We understand that CZ then connected Mr Saqib with the World Liberty Financial team, and a week later after his visit, World Liberty named Mr Saqib an adviser. On April 26, the WLF team arrived in Pakistan to sign a MoU with the government.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Zhao denied making any introductions for World Liberty\u2019s foreign travels, stating, \u201cI am not a fixer for anyone. I did NOT \u2018connect Mr. Saqib with the WLF team\u2019\u201d. He explained that Witkoff and Mr. Saqib already knew each other, unlike him, who only \u201cmet with Mr. Saqib for the first time in Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forces \u2018Target\u2019 US Crypto Industry<\/h2>\n

The Binance founder considers that forces in the US are trying to \u201chinder efforts in making the US the capital of crypto,\u201d attempting to attack the industry, its global leaders, and the pro-crypto administration. The \u201cWSJ is just the mouthpiece,\u201d he affirmed.<\/p>\n

For context, the report raised concerns<\/a> regarding the \u201cextraordinary blurring of government negotiations and private business dealings,\u201d claiming that it is \u201crewriting the diplomatic playbook for some foreign countries looking to gain traction with the new Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The WSJ argued that father-and-son duo Steve Witkoff and Zach Witkoff have potentially helped blur the lines of private business and public duties of the current administration, highlighting World Liberty Financial\u2019s (WLFI) recent deal to enable MGX\u2019s $2 billion investment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WLFI\u2019s spokesman, David Wachsman, told The WSJ that the company\u2019s business deals have nothing to do with the US government, affirming that the company \u201cwouldn\u2019t even have the ability or insight to discuss official government business.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that \u201cattempting to frame WLFI and Ambassador Witkoff taking meetings in the same country as some sort of conflict of interest\u201d is incorrect. Notably, Steve Witkoff is the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East, and one of WLFI\u2019s co-founders alongside his son.<\/p>\n

The WSJ also noted a previous article that claimed the elder Witkoff was allegedly involved in the talks between the Trump family and Binance. As reported<\/a> by Bitcoinist, the article stated that representatives of US President Donald Trump\u2019s family have held talks to acquire a financial stake in Binance US since 2024.<\/p>\n

This was part of the global exchange\u2019s alleged plan to return to the US and obtain an official pardon for its former CEO. However, CZ denied the \u201cdeal for a pardon\u201d allegations, stating, \u201cThe WSJ article got the facts wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
