{"id":28871,"date":"2025-05-27T18:31:49","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=28871"},"modified":"2025-05-27T18:31:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:31:49","slug":"maras-fred-thiel-says-u-s-should-start-mining-bitcoin-to-fill-strategic-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=28871","title":{"rendered":"MARA\u2019s Fred Thiel Says U.S. Should Start Mining Bitcoin to Fill Strategic Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>LAS VEGAS, Nevada \u2014\u00a0Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA) CEO Fred Thiel has an idea for how U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s administration can make good on its promises to build out a strategic bitcoin reserve: start mining.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on a panel at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Thiel said that the U.S. government has many potential ways to generate bitcoin to fill the strategic bitcoin reserve that would adhere to the \u201cbudget-neutral\u201d acquisition strategy laid out in Trump\u2019s March executive order, including using excess hydroenergy to mine bitcoin domestically.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s been nearly three months since Trump authorized the establishment of a strategic bitcoin reserve, it remains unclear exactly how \u2014 and when \u2014\u00a0the government will take steps to actually begin filling it, a source of evident frustration among a number of speakers at the conference.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s critical,\u201d Thiel said of acquiring bitcoin for the reserve. \u201cThe U.S. making a statement that we\u2019re going to have a strategic reserve is an empty statement unless you start putting stuff into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>At this point, the reserve is supposed to hold all of the bitcoin that has been sized by the government in civil and criminal forfeitures \u2014 estimated to be approximately 200,000 bitcoins. But many in the industry and government, including Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), think that getting the government\u2019s existing stockpile of bitcoin into a strategic reserve is merely a first step, to be followed by bigger, more meaningful acquisitions.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>In March, Lummis re-introduced legislation \u2014\u00a0the so-called BITCOIN Act of 2025 \u2014 aimed at codifying Trump\u2019s plans for a strategic bitcoin reserve. Under Lummis\u2019 plan, after getting all of the forfeited bitcoin into the reserve, the U.S. government would spend the next two to five years converting a portion of its gold certificates into bitcoin.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough assets in under performing assets that we can get five percent of the world\u2019s bitcoin without spending a single dime,\u201d Lummis said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>However, Lummis acknowledged that it\u2019s unlikely that any real movement on the BITCOIN Act \u2014 or, more broadly, taking any significant steps to fill the strategic reserve with anything other than forfeited assets \u2014\u00a0will come before Congress works its way through stablecoin and market structure legislation.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a heavier lift than I thought because so many people don\u2019t understand bitcoin,\u201d Lummis said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LAS VEGAS, Nevada \u2014\u00a0Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA) CEO Fred Thiel has an idea for how U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s administration can make good on its promises to build out a strategic bitcoin reserve: start mining.
