Late Sunday, Elon Musk broke<\/a> the news directly on X: \u201cAll new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio\/video calling. This is built on Rust with (Bitcoin style) encryption, whole new architecture. You can do audio\/video calls without a phone number across all platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n

By Monday morning X engineers had begun pushing the first builds to Premium subscribers. A company memo seen by Business Insider says early versions lock each chat behind a four-digit pass-code until the rollout stabilises, after which the feature set will \u201ccascade to all tiers.\u201d<\/p>\n

What \u201cBitcoin-Style\u201d Encryption Could Mean<\/h2>\n

While Musk did not specify what \u201cBitcoin-style\u201d encryption means, it can be speculated.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s blockchain data is not encrypted, but the network is authenticated and permission-less thanks to a tight suite of cryptographic primitives\u2014most notably the secp256k1 elliptic-curve and ECDSA\/Schnorr signatures<\/a>. Those same primitives form the backbone of BIP 324, an opt-in transport layer that encrypts peer-to-peer traffic with an Elliptic-Curve Diffie-Hellman handshake, then secures packets with ChaCha20-Poly1305. The proposal is now partially merged into Bitcoin Core.<\/p>\n

Rust implementations of those libraries\u2014rust-secp256k1 and related crates\u2014have been audited for years inside the BTC ecosystem. In practice, they enable a stateless, low-latency channel that retains forward secrecy once the ephemeral key material is discarded. That architecture maps neatly onto Musk\u2019s requirements: encrypted payloads, vanishing messages, and identity decoupled from phone numbers.<\/p>\n

Core contributor James O\u2019Beirne has long argued that without transport-layer encryption, \u201cthe claim of \u2018censorship resistance\u2019 is sort of a bluff while P2P traffic happens in the clear.\u201d Lightning Labs co-founder Olaoluwa Osuntokun told the Bitcoin Optech podcast that BIP 324<\/a> \u201cis a pretty big bump\u201d because it finally hides link-level metadata for light clients.<\/p>\n

If XChat ultimately adopts the secp256k1-based handshake outlined<\/a> in BIP 324, it would deliver forward secrecy and low-latency performance comparable to Lightning-network transports. As of press time, no independent audit of XChat\u2019s source code has been published, and the precise cryptographic design therefore remains unverified.<\/p>\n

A Deeper Musk-Bitcoin Nexus<\/h2>\n

Musk\u2019s decision to badge the upgrade as \u201cBitcoin-style\u201d is not merely rhetorical. In February 2021 Tesla disclosed a $1.5 billion BTC purchase in its 10-K filing, calling it a reserve-management strategy. Although the automaker sold roughly 75% of those holdings in Q2 2022, Tesla continues to hold<\/a> approximately 10,725 BTC on its balance sheet, according to the latest shareholder letter.<\/p>\n

Beyond treasury activity, Musk has periodically lent public support to the ecosystem, and initiated<\/a> a short-lived \u201cBitcoin Mining Council\u201d in 2021 to discuss renewable energy data.<\/p>\n

At press time, BTC traded at $104,879.<\/p>\n
