{"id":32385,"date":"2025-06-18T06:01:44","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T06:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=32385"},"modified":"2025-06-18T06:01:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T06:01:44","slug":"genius-act-clears-senate-setting-the-stage-for-stablecoin-oversight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=32385","title":{"rendered":"GENIUS Act Clears Senate, Setting the Stage for Stablecoin Oversight"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The US Senate has passed the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act in a 68 to 30 vote on June 17.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark bill sets the first federal regulations for dollar-pegged <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptopotato.com\/stablecoins-emerging-as-the-dominant-force-in-crypto-coinbase\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">stablecoins<\/a> in America and has been lauded by the crypto industry.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe GENIUS Act will protect consumers, enable responsible innovation, and safeguard the dominance of the U.S. dollar,\u201d said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, one of the bill\u2019s sponsors.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Having <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptopotato.com\/genius-stablecoin-bill-passes-to-next-stage-of-voting\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">passed<\/a> the Senate, the bill still needs to pass the Republican controlled House before it can be made into law.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">JUST IN: Senate passes GENIUS Act for federal stablecoin regulation, by a vote of 51-23.<\/p>\n<p>Now moves to the House.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bitcoin Laws (@Bitcoin_Laws) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bitcoin_Laws\/status\/1935087529327476851?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">June 17, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Greenlight for Stablecoins<\/h2>\n<p>The GENIUS Act was introduced by Senator Bill Hagerty in February to regulate the $260 billion stablecoin market. Speaking after the vote on Tuesday, Hagerty said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to open the door for innovation in America like we\u2019ve never seen before. This is an inflection point moving the USA into the digital age,\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that the bill was the first step in making sure that the dollar remains the dominant currency of the world. By moving payments onto the blockchain, this will create more efficiency and take a lot of the cost out of the system, he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The GENIUS Act has PASSED in the Senate! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aWEgYKXNgf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/aWEgYKXNgf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Bill Hagerty (@SenatorHagerty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorHagerty\/status\/1935099526756302871?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">June 17, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was also onboard, saying that \u201cStablecoin legislation backed by US Treasuries or T-bills will create a market that will expand US dollar usage via these stablecoins all around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Chairman Tim Scott called it a historic day for our nation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAfter voting on 40 amendments [\u2026], we were able to forge a piece of legislation that focuses on the marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptopotato.com\/genius-act-gains-support-from-a16zs-chris-dixon-and-coinbases-brian-armstrong\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">legislation<\/a> requires stablecoins to be fully backed and for issuers to undergo regular security audits and approval from federal or state regulators. It also imposes limitations on algorithmic stablecoins and those without full backing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: The GENIUS Act has officially passed the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>I caught up with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BankingGOP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">@BankingGOP<\/a> Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorTimScott?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">@SenatorTimScott<\/a> after the vote.
