In the distant future, historians may well look back at August 11, 2020 as the day Bitcoin began.<\/p>\n

True, Bitcoin had already been around for over a decade at that point. But in late summer of 2020, Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy (at the time, a business intelligence company) announced that the company would invest $250M into buying Bitcoin.<\/p>\n

The move was a surprise, but whether he intended to or not, Saylor premiered an entirely new use case for the world\u2019s leading cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n

Before Saylor, Bitcoin was a store of value. After Saylor, it became a valid form of long-term investment.<\/p>\n

And Bitcoin would never be the same again.<\/p>\n

MicroStrategy\u2019s initial Bitcoin buy happened again. And again. And again. Each time, the idea of buying Bitcoin as a reserve asset became a little less strange and a little more appealing (to an increasing number of asset managers).<\/p>\n

And eventually, the idea began to spread, with other entities from governments (El Salvador<\/a>, USA) to major tech companies (Tesla<\/a>) following suit.<\/p>\n

Today, over 235 public\/private companies and institutions hold Bitcoin in reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MicroStrategy still leads the pack with 592K BTC worth over $62B<\/a>, but other major holders include Tesla, Coinbase, Galaxy Digital, and even national governments like the United States, China, and the UK.<\/p>\n

In many ways, these entities treat Bitcoin the same way traditional treasurers once treated gold or U.S. bonds. But Bitcoin strategies have moved beyond just piling up Bitcoin in digital vaults; they\u2019re calculated bets on Bitcoin\u2019s multi-role future.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin Treasuries as Diversification<\/h2>\n

Bitcoin strategies have evolved beyond mere hoarding.<\/p>\n

An increasingly large part of the total Bitcoin supply goes towards ETFs and funds.<\/p>\n

Governments hold hundreds of thousands of Bitcoin between them. Sometimes those coins are held informally, seized from enforcement actions and confiscations.<\/p>\n

Other times, as is the case with the United States, they form part of formal national Bitcoin reserves<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In fact, governments are one of the largest Bitcoin holders when looking at the entire sector. Only ETFs and public companies hold more.<\/p>\n

Treasuries have moved from the fringe to the mainstream, and Bitcoin isn\u2019t the player in the game anymore. Solana treasuries are also gaining steam. DeFi Development Corp ($DFDV) has amassed over 620K $SOL and watched its own stock price soar over 4,000% percent.<\/p>\n

Solana treasuries rely on yield generation and DeFi to leverage treasuries for long-term gain. It\u2019s a more native integration than is currently possible with Bitcoin treasuries.<\/p>\n
