According to a study by Solidus Labs,\u00a0nearly 99% of tokens on DIY meme platform Pump.fun collapse into worthless pump & dump schemes<\/a>. On Raydium’s DEX, the firm found roughly 93% of token liquidity pools have \u2018rug pull characteristics.’<\/p>\n

An analysis of token promotions on Telegram by CertiK found that nearly half of the 93,930 new tokens promoted between 2023 and 2024 were\u00a0involved in deceptive exit swindles<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aan astonishing 46,526.<\/p>\n

Fraudsters got 282,699.96 ETH off the back of these cons, roughly $800 million.<\/p>\n

The numbers are staggering \u200a\u2014 \u200aand not just the losses. Tokens proliferate at a pace that makes it all but impossible for buyers to discern a promising investment from a money-losing sinkhole.<\/p>\n

But experts say volume isn’t the issue\u200a, it’s\u00a0lack of transparency.\u00a0A dearth of reliable information has created what 1970s economist\u00a0George Akerlof<\/a>\u00a0called\u00a0A Market for Lemons<\/em>, where information asymmetry can cause entire markets to collapse.<\/p>\n

Are tokens broken?<\/h2>\n

In a\u00a0recent presentation<\/a>\u00a0at Blockchain VC DBA’s Research Day 2025,\u00a0Theia Research co-founder Felipe Montealegre<\/strong> captured the nub of the problem.<\/p>\n
