Many users were prompted to connect their crypto wallets before the scam was revealed.<\/p>\n<p>By the time the fake offer disappeared, unsuspecting visitors had already clicked through, risking their funds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.1.0\/72x72\/1f6a8.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udea8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\"> ALERT: We are aware of a fraudulent pop-up falsely claiming to offer \u201cCoinTelegraph ICO Airdrops\u201d or \u201cCTG tokens\u201d that are appearing on our site.<\/p>\n<p>DO NOT:<br \/>\n\u2013 Click on these pop-ups<br \/>\n\u2013 Connect your wallets<br \/>\n\u2013 Enter any personal information<\/p>\n<p>We are actively working on a fix.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cointelegraph (@Cointelegraph) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Cointelegraph\/status\/1936959898094583916?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 23, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Fake Airdrop Interface<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to Scam Sniffer, the bogus pop-up included a countdown timer and buttons that felt just like a standard token drop. It even showed a reward worth $5,490 and labeled the process \u201csecure,\u201d \u201cinstant,\u201d and \u201cverified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on reports, none of those descriptions were true. There is no CTG token on CoinGecko, <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CoinMarketCap<\/a>, or any major blockchain explorer. Please be cautious. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sH025Zek8p\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/sH025Zek8p<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Scam Sniffer | Web3 Anti-Scam (@realScamSniffer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realScamSniffer\/status\/1936956218423320916?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 23, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Attack Via Ad System<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Security experts traced the malicious JavaScript back to Cointelegraph\u2019s ad partner rather than its core website code.<\/p>\n<p>Cointelegraph later confirmed that the breach came through its advertising system and not a flaw in its main infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/coinmarketcap-briefly-hacked-to-drain-crypto-wallets-via-fake-web3-popup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A similar hack hit CoinMarketCap<\/a> over the same weekend, showing that attackers are now focusing on trusted ad networks to slip in harmful scripts.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/x\/Pmjmm4Em\/\" width=\"1835\" height=\"884\"><br \/>\n<strong>Wallet Draining Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once a user clicked \u201cconnect,\u201d the hidden code could trigger wallet approvals and transfers without clear consent.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively, hackers have blanket permission to transfer money out of a wallet in seconds. This approach is riskier than standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proofpoint.com\/us\/threat-reference\/phishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">phishing<\/a> emails because they sneak up on individuals unexpectedly on sites they trust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calls For Improved Defenses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As these ad-based attacks become increasingly prevalent, crypto platforms come under pressure to lock down all third-party integrations.<\/p>\n<p>Experts recommend more rigorous audits of ad code, sandboxing of third-party scripts, and real-time monitoring of site activity. On the end-user side, installing ad blockers or script-blocking add-ons would preclude these stealth threats.<\/p>\n<p>Based on what transpired this weekend, it\u2019s apparent that attackers have changed their modus operandi from email cons to front-end hacks on prominent sites.
