The US Securities and Exchange Commission late\u202fTuesday published a Schedule\u202f13G filing<\/a> that entities controlled by Peter\u202fThiel\u2019s Founders\u202fFund have quietly amassed\u202f5,094,000 common shares of BitMine\u202f Immersion\u202f Technologies\u202f(NYSE\u202fAmerican:\u202fBMNR), an Ethereum treasury company , equal to 9.1\u202fpercent of the company\u2019s outstanding stock as of July\u202f8\u202f\u2014 the first time the billionaire venture capitalist has taken a material position in a publicly listed \u201cEthereum\u2011treasury\u201d play. The filing lists the stake across six Delaware vehicles, but names Thiel<\/a> as the ultimate manager with shared voting and dispositive power; it also checks the passive\u2011investor box, signalling no immediate intent to seek control of the Las\u202fVegas\u2011based firm.<\/p>\n

Ethereum Scores Major Backer<\/h2>\n

News of the disclosure sent BitMine shares up more than 12\u202fpercent to $44.97 in post\u2011market trading, adding roughly $280\u202fmillion to a market capitalisation that has already ballooned. The after\u2011hours move extends a wild rally that saw the stock surge 3,000\u202fpercent in the week to July\u202f3 after BitMine revealed a $250\u202fmillion private placement earmarked entirely for Ethereum purchases and installed Fundstrat co\u2011founder Thomas\u202f\u201cTom\u201d\u202fLee<\/a> as board chairman.<\/p>\n

BitMine\u2019s pace of accumulation has been even faster than its share\u2011price ascent. In a press release dated July\u202f14 the company said it now holds 163,142\u202fETH \u2014 roughly $500\u202fmillion at the time \u2014 barely three business days after closing the initial raise. \u201cSince closing on the $250\u202fmillion private placement, we have surpassed $500\u202fmillion in Ethereum holdings, which validates our mission to increase our stake in the Ethereum network,\u201d Lee said. Chief executive Jonathan\u202fBates added that \u201cWall Street is getting \u2018ETH\u2011pilled.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee, long known for his Bitcoin price targets, is positioning BitMine as the Ethereum analogue to MicroStrategy<\/a>: a corporate balancesheet vehicle designed to scale into a strategic, yield\u2011bearing crypto reserve. \u201cAmong Bitcoin treasury companies we have witnessed the reflexive benefit of acquiring large holdings\u2026 Similarly, ETH treasuries which accumulate 5\u202fpercent of ETH supply can benefit from a comparable \u2018Wall Street put,\u2019\u201d he argued in the same statement \u2014 invoking the idea that massive on\u2011balance\u2011sheet crypto positions can create a floor under the equity itself.<\/p>\n

Thiel\u2019s entrance adds marquee validation to that thesis. The 13G shows the purchase price was not disclosed, but the 5.1\u202fmillion\u2011share block underscores the scale of the bet. Because the filing came under Rule\u202f13d\u20111(c), Thiel is signalling a passive stance \u2014 at least for now \u2014 yet his long\u2011standing interest in Ethereum is well documented: the Thiel Foundation\u2019s 2014 fellowship famously bankrolled Vitalik\u202fButerin\u2019s decision to drop out of university to build the protocol.<\/p>\n

The Ethereum community greeted the news with typical bombast. \u201cETH is going so much higher than you can even imagine,\u201d wrote podcaster and on\u2011chain analyst @sassal0x. Bankless co\u2011founder Ryan Sean Adams confessed he \u201chad not been bullish enough,\u201d while macro trader Mortensen\u202fBach urged followers to keep BitMine on their watchlists: \u201cThings are starting to be interesting \u2013 This one should be on top of your watchlist. Question is? Do you buy in now in anticipation of ETH treasury doubling. What I mean is that if they increase ETH holding massively, it can grow into a much better valuation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Institutional appetite for Ethereum balance\u2011sheet strategies has accelerated in recent weeks. Corporate treasuries toward ETH\u2011staking as a yield\u2011bearing alternative to Bitcoin, with BitMine, Bit\u202fDigital and SharpLink have each experienced double\u2011digit stock pops after announcing similar plans.<\/p>\n
