The White House on Thursday confirmed that President\u202fDonald\u202fTrump remains committed to carving out a de\u202fminimis tax safe\u2011harbor for everyday Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency payments, a policy his economic team believes will let digital money function \u201cas simply as buying a cup of coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump Backs Bitcoin And Crypto Tax Exemption<\/h2>\n

Press Secretary Karoline\u202fLeavitt made the remarks during the daily briefing after Bitcoin\u202fMagazine correspondent Frank\u202fCorva pressed<\/a> the administration on whether the president still stands behind the $600 threshold he first floated earlier this year. \u201cThe president did signal his support for a de\u202fminimis exemption for crypto, and the administration continues to be in support of that,\u201d Leavitt said, adding that the Treasury and Congress are \u201cexploring legislative solutions to accomplish that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leavitt argued the measure would remove the micro\u2011accounting burden that currently forces users to calculate capital\u2011gains tax every time they spend appreciated digital assets. \u201cRight now that cannot happen, but with a de\u202fminimis exemption perhaps it could in the future,\u201d she told reporters, framing the carve\u2011out as critical to Trump\u2019s pledge<\/a> to make the United\u202fStates \u201cthe crypto capital of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exemption is expected to surface in follow\u2011on tax legislation later this year, but it already has momentum on Capitol\u202fHill. The House on Wednesday advanced the bipartisan Genius Act<\/a>, the first comprehensive federal framework for stablecoins, and a separate bill that would write a de\u202fminimis standard directly into the Internal Revenue Code. The Genius Act cleared the chamber 308\u2011122 and is scheduled for a Rose Garden signing ceremony on Friday, Leavitt said.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s push picks up a debate that began in 2022, when senators Pat\u202fToomey and Kyrsten\u202fSinema introduced the Virtual Currency Tax Fairness Act to exempt gains of up to $200 per transaction\u2014far below the $600 ceiling now backed by the White House. Industry groups such as Coin\u202fCenter and the Blockchain Association have long argued that parity with foreign\u2011currency rules is essential for retail crypto adoption.<\/p>\n

Leavitt also reiterated that the president \u201copposes a central\u2011bank digital currency,\u201d noting Trump\u2019s January executive order barring the Federal Reserve from issuing one and endorsing congressional efforts to codify that ban. She portrayed the combined package\u2014stablecoin oversight, securities\u2011clarity rules, an anti\u2011CBDC statute<\/a> and the forthcoming de\u202fminimis fix\u2014as \u201ca regulatory foundation that will unleash American leadership in digital assets for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

A $600 exclusion would dramatically reduce friction for low\u2011value crypto spending while leaving large transfers fully taxable, striking a balance between usability and revenue protection. Whether the final threshold lands at $200, $600 or is indexed for inflation will hinge on Senate negotiations later this summer, but the White House endorsement gives the measure its strongest tail\u2011wind yet. As Leavitt summed up: \u201cThe president looks forward to signing every piece of pro\u2011crypto legislation Congress can send him.\u201d<\/p>\n
