Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko is once again at the center of a heated debate. This time for branding meme coins and NFTs as \u201cdigital slop\u201d in a public back-and-forth with Base creator Jesse Pollak.<\/p>\n

The discussion, which unfolded on X over the weekend, revolved around the perceived value of meme coins and NFTs.<\/p>\n

Clash Over NFT, Meme Coins Value<\/h2>\n

Yakovenko maintained his stance that these assets hold no intrinsic value and compared them to loot boxes found in free-to-play mobile games. His tweet said<\/a>,<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve said this for years. Memecoins and NFTs are digital slop.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pollak, however, disagreed and said that the cultural and artistic substance behind NFTs gives them inherent worth. He argued that it is similar to fine art, which holds value regardless of monetization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe content itself is valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIf not for meme coins, nobody would bother using Solana,\u201d one X user shot back<\/a>. Others accused him of undermining the very sectors that revived Solana after its post-FTX slump. Flaunch contributor \u201cCaps\u201d also criticized<\/a> Yakovenko for dismissing creators and traders alike.<\/p>\n

Still, a few came to his defense. The co-founder of NFT collection Space Riders acknowledged<\/a> the criticism but saw credibility in Yakovenko\u2019s perspective. \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s entirely wrong. If people enjoy digital slop, they\u2019ll keep buying it. That\u2019s the point,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that meme coins and NFTs remain deeply embedded in Solana\u2019s success story.<\/p>\n

According to a recent report by Syndica, meme coin DApps now account<\/a> for a record-breaking 62% of Solana\u2019s monthly DApp revenue, with Pump.fun leading the charge. The protocol just marked one year as the network\u2019s highest earner, after transforming<\/a> from a simple meme coin launcher into a revenue-sharing exchange.<\/p>\n

Pump.fun\u2019s ambitions are growing, too, as it\u2019s now setting its sights on competing with social media giants like TikTok and Twitch.<\/p>\n
