In Beijing, prosecutors have jailed eight people for running a year\u2011long Bitcoin scam<\/a> that drained over\u202f140\u202fmillion\u202fyuan\u2014around\u202f$20 million\u2014from a short\u2010video platform and then funneled the cash into crypto.<\/p>\n

According to a White Paper released by the People\u2019s Procuratorate of Haidian District, the case ranks among the most complex anti\u2011corruption cases handled between 2020 and 2024. What began as simple bonus approvals inside the company turned into a year\u2011long scheme that hid stolen funds behind shell firms and digital currencies.<\/p>\n

Insider Power Opened Loopholes<\/h2>\n

Based on reports<\/a>, an employee named Feng held sole control over service\u2011provider onboarding, bonus qualifications and payout approvals.<\/p>\n

He quietly tweaked bonus policies to create gaps that only he and two outside helpers, Tang and Yang, could exploit. Fake documents flowed in with private data that Feng leaked.<\/p>\n

Then the trio rerouted bonus payments into made\u2011up accounts, instead of rewarding real work. By the time auditors spotted the missing cash, nearly\u202f140\u202fmillion\u202fyuan had already vanished.<\/p>\n

Fake Firms And Laundering Chain<\/h2>\n

The gang used shell companies<\/a> with no real operations. Yang directed associate Wang and others to set up around 10 of these paper businesses.<\/p>\n

All they did was collect the bogus bonus payouts. From there, funds jumped across multiple bank accounts until they landed in Yang\u2019s hands. Feng then ordered the next step: converting it into Bitcoin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They split the loot on eight different international platforms and mixed the coins, scrambling the transaction trail to hide the money\u2019s origin.<\/p>\n

Authorities Trace Bitcoin Flow<\/p>\n

Prosecutor Li Tao, of Haidian\u2019s Science and Technology Crime division, built a detailed map of the scam. By comparing company data logs, bank records and blockchain transfers, his team peeled back each layer of concealment.<\/p>\n

They even recovered over 90 Bitcoin during the investigation\u2014enough to prove exactly how the \u201cclosed\u2011loop\u201d laundering chain worked. Each recovered coin tied back to the stolen rewards, confirming every twist of the money\u2019s path.<\/p>\n

Sentencing took into account each person\u2019s role. Feng received the longest term\u201414\u202fyears and six months behind bars\u2014while the other seven were handed prison sentences ranging from three to 14\u202fyears, plus hefty fines.<\/p>\n

All were found guilty of occupational embezzlement. This case serves as a warning: when one person holds too much power, even routine bonus systems can become vehicles for big fraud\u2014and modern crypto tools can\u2019t guarantee anonymity forever.<\/p>\n
