In 2024, Visa \u2013 global payments superpower \u2013 did $13.2T in total payments volume, according to the company\u2019s fiscal EOY report. That was up nearly 8% from the previous year.<\/p>\n

Visa Adds 3 Stablecoins, 2 Blockchains<\/h2>\n

Visa announced a major expansion<\/a> of its crypto settlement infrastructure. Through a new partnership with Paxos, Visa added support for two U.S. dollar\u2011backed stablecoins \u2013 PayPal USD ($PYUSD, $1B market cap) and Global Dollar ($USDG, $326M market cap).<\/p>\n

And, to facilitate European transactions, it added Circle\u2019s euro\u2011backed $EURC as well ($206M market cap).<\/p>\n

On the blockchain side, PayPal\u2019s multi\u2011chain architecture now includes Stellar and Avalanche, joining Ethereum and Solana. Four blockchains supported marks Visa\u2019s shift toward a more robust multi\u2011chain settlement layer.<\/p>\n

Rubail Birwadker, Visa\u2019s Global Head of Growth Products, described the initiative as \u2018building a multi\u2011coin and multi\u2011chain foundation to help meet the needs of our partners worldwide,\u2019 stating that \u2018when stablecoins are trusted, scalable and interoperable, they can fundamentally transform how money moves around the world.\u2019<\/p>\n

Given that \u2018moving money around the world\u2019 is exactly what Visa is all about, adding blockchain support makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n

Visa\u2019s Moves Underscore Growing Adoption<\/h2>\n

Visa\u2019s stablecoin journey began in 2020 with $USDC pilot settlements, and the new additions bring the platform to four stablecoins across four networks, supported by real\u2011world deployments from banks, fintechs, and card issuers.<\/p>\n

One such deployment was announced back in April, when Visa partnered with Bridge<\/a> to allow fintech devs to more easily provide stablecoin-linked crypto Visa cards.<\/p>\n

And the latest expansion arrives just weeks after the U.S. enacted the GENIUS Act<\/a>, the first federal legislation defining regulatory frameworks for payment stablecoins.<\/p>\n

The act required full\u2011reserve backing, Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance, and issuer oversight.<\/p>\n

So far, the promise of better oversight has served as a catalyst from more adoption..<\/p>\n

Visa\u2019s move aligns with broader developments in the industry, with Mastercard already having integrated Fiserv\u2019s $FIUSD stablecoin<\/a> into its global network.<\/p>\n
