Binance then accepts the Treasuries as margin for trading, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b1f596c8-f823-42b9-b634-d0f749a3ccca\">FT said, citing people familiar with the process.<\/a> If Binance were to fail, funds would remain secure in the Treasuries under BBVA\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p>The deal distances the exchange from its earlier model of holding user funds in-house. The shift follows mounting pressure on crypto exchanges to isolate custody from trading, especially after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2023\/10\/03\/the-collapse-of-ftx-in-sams-own-words\">FTX\u2019s collapse in 2022<\/a>, which left users\u2019 funds frozen and shattered confidence across the market. Others measures exchange adopted include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/learn\/proof-of-reserves-could-it-have-prevented-the-ftx-meltdown\">proof-of-reserves<\/a>, a cryptographic method of proving customers\u2019 funds are in their wallets.<\/p>\n<p>Binance, which paid a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2023\/11\/21\/binance-to-settle-charges-with-us-doj-source\"> $4.3 billion penalty<\/a> last year to U.S. regulators for anti-money laundering failures, has since allowed clients to use third-party custodians including Sygnum and FlowBank. <\/p>\n<p>BBVA has been moving deeper into crypto.
