The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) delayed decisions on nine crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) applications on Aug. 18.<\/span><\/p>\n

The delays extended review periods for products related to digital assets, spanning Bitcoin<\/a>, XRP<\/a>, Litecoin<\/a>, and Dogecoin<\/a>. The reason is likely the agency\u2019s work to establish a comprehensive digital asset framework.<\/span><\/p>\n

The postponements affect Truth\u2019s<\/a> spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF, CoinShares\u2019 spot Litecoin ETF, and multiple XRP ETF applications from 21Shares<\/a>, CoinShares<\/a>, Bitwise<\/a>, Canary<\/a>, and Grayscale<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The SEC also delayed 21Shares\u2019 staking proposal for its spot Ethereum<\/a> ETF and Grayscale\u2019s spot Dogecoin ETF application.<\/span><\/p>\n

Except for Truth\u2019s filing, the delayed products all have final deadlines for October.<\/span><\/p>\n

Framework strategy is a priority<\/h2>\n

Bloomberg ETF analysts Eric Balchunas<\/a> and James Seyffart<\/a> suggested in July that the delays<\/span> reflect the SEC\u2019s strategy<\/a><\/strong> to establish approval criteria before greenlighting individual applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seyffart stated that this \u201cmight be the SEC\u2019s way of stalling these things from becoming ETFs before they develop a digital assets ETF framework.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added that the framework would create \u201csome sort of generic listing standard for what digital assets are allowed in an ETF wrapper and what criteria they\u2019ll use.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0approach mentioned aims to replace<\/a> the current case-by-case review process, which\u00a0requires each crypto ETF to secure a Commission order before listing.<\/p>\n

The SEC has been reportedly collaborating with US exchanges since July on generic listing standards for token-based ETFs that would eliminate individual rule-change requests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Generic approach<\/h2>\n

The proposed system would allow ETF sponsors to bypass the customary Form 19b-4 process when underlying tokens meet predetermined criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the proposed framework, sponsors would submit registration statements on Form S-1, observe standard 75-day review periods, and list products once waiting periods conclude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Market capitalization, on-exchange trading volume, and daily liquidity rank among the metrics under discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seyffart called the generic standard approach \u201cvery good news for the crypto ETF space,\u201d arguing it would offer \u201cclear rules of the road.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Balchunas described the concept as \u201cwhat everyone wants, what makes sense, and what we think will happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, the first altcoin-related ETF approvals might likely start only in October.<\/span><\/p>\n
