The call for change comes amid the country\u2019s political turmoil, which has halted all related regulations until 2025.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Korea Exchange Chief Calls For A Change<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, Jeong Eun-bo, chairman of the South Korea Stock Exchange, called for the institutionalization of crypto in the country. In an interview with the local newspaper Maeil Kyungjae, Jeong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mk.co.kr\/news\/stock\/11194952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">stated<\/a> that lawmakers and financial institutions must look at digital assets differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chairman argued that the crypto industry has significantly grown in recent years, making it considerably influential. As such, \u201cit cannot be ignored by traditional markets,\u201d adding that South Korea should try incorporating digital assets into institutional finance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, Jeong considers that the South Korean crypto market needs to be revitalized to compete with other countries and prevent falling behind international markets. The current <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/bitcoin-etf-ban-south-korean-authorities-crack-down-on-spot-and-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">treatment<\/a> of digital assets has made the market fail to cross various regulatory thresholds for years, challenging the market\u2019s development and competitiveness.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we continue to vaguely treat cryptocurrencies as speculative assets and hold those who adopt them liable, we will fall behind in international competitiveness.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Korea Exchange chairman shared that the digital assets market\u2019s future was \u201cseriously discussed\u201d at the recent World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) meeting, debating that it would be \u201cdifficult\u201d for stock exchanges to maintain \u201cthe traditional market\u2019s profit model by neglecting the crypto market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, he suggested that South Korea should strive to \u201cquickly institutionalize the crypto market to generate new added value.\u201d Jeong noted that after the post-US election rally started in early November, the digital assets market overtook the domestic stock market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/south-korean-crypto-exchanges-hit-record-breaking-34-billion-volume-following-market-shakeout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">reported<\/a> by Bitcoinist, the crypto market\u2019s trading volume surpassed the local stock market\u2019s $14 billion volume by 22%. Additionally, South Korean exchanges recorded their largest levels this year, hitting $34 billion amid the political turmoil.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto Regulations On Pause Until 2025<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Jeong\u2019s call for revitalizing the market and institutionalizing digital assets, crypto-related regulations will be <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/cryptocurrency-tax-postponed-south-korea-extends-breathing-room-to-2027\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \">suspended<\/a> until the political crisis resolution, which could take a few months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared the first emergency martial law in four decades, causing panic among Koreans. Yoon accused the country\u2019s opposition Democratic party, which has a majority in the National Assembly, of sympathizing with North Korea and anti-state activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He claimed that the measure was taken to \u201ceradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order.\u201d However, the National Assembly voted to nullify the President\u2019s declaration and successfully ended the emergency martial law in six hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, the Assembly impeached Yoon, and his presidential powers have been suspended. The Constitutional Court is currently determining whether to remove Yoon from office or reinstate him, Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-yoon-martial-law-investigation-constitutional-court-8ec38d61f0ea5c48b3bd1f683b5e9c8d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other local media outlets revealed that all crypto-related policies have been halted due to the country\u2019s ongoing political issues.
