HONG KONG \u2014 Binance founder Changpeng \u201cCZ\u201d Zhao believes the convergence of equity markets and crypto is ushering in a new era for digital assets, one that expands access to institutional capital and broadens crypto\u2019s global reach. <\/p>\n

But he cautions that the sector still faces significant risks, especially as it enters its first major bull cycle since these structures gained traction.<\/p>\n

Speaking at BTC Asia in Hong Kong, CZ said moves by public companies to hold bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets \u2014 following the example set by MicroStrategy \u2014 mark a breakthrough moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the world\u2019s largest economy, 90%-95% of the money is managed by institutions,\u201d he noted. \u201cUntil ETFs and treasury companies, those guys couldn\u2019t participate in crypto in a large way.\u201d<\/p>\n

By bringing crypto exposure to equity markets in the U.S., Hong Kong, Japan and beyond, CZ said the industry is effectively \u201cbringing the equity markets to crypto, or bringing crypto to them \u2014 depending how you look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tokenization Push<\/h2>\n

Beyond bitcoin treasuries and ETFs, Zhao pointed to the surge in tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) as another transformative trend. Stablecoins, treasury bills, commodities, real estate and even personal income streams are being tokenized, funneling \u201chundreds of millions and billions\u201d into the crypto economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going both ways,\u201d CZ said. \u201cEquity markets now have access to crypto, and we\u2019re bringing real-world assets into crypto. This is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Risks of Overreach<\/h2>\n

Despite his enthusiasm, CZ warned that not every company pursuing this strategy will succeed.<\/p>\n

Some firms may use crypto treasuries as a way to \u201cpump up their stock price,\u201d while others lack the expertise to manage complex baskets of digital assets or investments in crypto startups. Failures are inevitable, he said, especially when markets turn.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now we\u2019re in a bull market,\u201d Zhao said. \u201cBut eventually there will be a winter, there will be a bear market. Treasury companies will have to go through at least one cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n

MicroStrategy (MSTR), he noted, endured a painful first cycle but benefited later as its average bitcoin cost basis dropped.<\/p>\n

Stability vs Speculation<\/h2>\n

CZ argued that in the long run, larger inflows of capital from institutional and equity markets should reduce volatility.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically, the larger the market cap, the less volatility it has,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just physics. A bigger ship is more stable.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he acknowledged that equity markets are full of speculative traders, meaning short-term volatility could increase even as the overall asset class stabilizes over time.<\/p>\n

Beyond bitcoin<\/h2>\n

While bitcoin remains the centerpiece of most treasury strategies, CZ noted that other tokens are being adopted too \u2014 including a recently launched BNB treasury company.<\/p>\n

For smaller and newer tokens, however, the risks are magnified. \u201cThe more mature the ecosystem, the less risk,\u201d Zhao said. \u201cNewer ones may have higher risk and higher returns, but the established ones are safer bets.\u201dre<\/p>\n

For CZ, the fusion of crypto with traditional markets \u2014 through bitcoin treasuries, ETFs and tokenized RWAs \u2014 is overwhelmingly positive. Still, he urged caution.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot every treasury company is going to multiply in value,\u201d he said. \u201cInvestors need to evaluate them carefully, understand the risks, and be prepared for cycles.\u201d<\/p>\n
