President Trump\u2019s pick for Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has accused the founders of crypto exchange Gemini of interfering with his confirmation process following a key conversation from two months ago.<\/p>\n

CFTC Nominee Shares Texts With Gemini Founders<\/h2>\n

On Wednesday, CFTC Chairman nominee Brian Quintenz shared<\/a> private messages with Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, suggesting that the crypto exchange co-founders contacted the US President to pause his confirmation hearing back in July.<\/p>\n

In the X post, Quintenz stated, \u201cI\u2019ve never been inclined to release private messages. But in light of my support for the President and belief that he might have been misled, I\u2019ve posted here the messages that include the questions Tyler Winklevoss asked me pertaining to their prior litigation with the CFTC.\u201d<\/p>\n

The text messages, dated July 24 and 25, showed that the Gemini co-founder asked Quintenz\u2019s opinion on the crypto exchange\u2019s 13-page complaint letter to the CFTC\u2019s Inspector General, Christopher Skinner, raising multiple concerns and complaints about the agency\u2019s Division of Enforcement (DOE) conduct against the crypto exchange over the years.<\/p>\n

The letter accused<\/a> the DOE staff of waging a \u201ctrophy-hunting lawfare\u201d campaign based on \u201cfabricated\u201d statements and unfairly weaponizing the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) against the crypto exchange for seven years.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the CFTC sued Gemini, claiming that the exchange issued \u201cfalse and misleading statements\u201d regarding its actions to prevent\u00a0market manipulation\u00a0in Bitcoin (BTC) prices in 2017. However, Gemini Trust\u00a0agreed\u00a0to pay $5 million to the CFTC to resolve the allegations in January 2025.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s chair pick committed to \u201chaving a fair and reasonable review of the matter and the division and individuals involved to determine if they acted inappropriately,\u201d but asserted that \u201cthe implications of and solutions to this, however, should be unequivocally left to a fully confirmed chair.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the message<\/a> thread, Winklevoss was ultimately \u201cdisappointed and surprised\u201d with Quintenz\u2019s response, noting that \u201cCultural reform, which includes rectifying what happened to us, should be the highest priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crypto Feud Halts Quintenz\u2019s Confirmation<\/h2>\n

The CFTC nominee affirmed that \u201cthese texts make it clear what they were after from me, and what I refused to promise,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s my understanding that after this exchange they contacted the President and asked that my confirmation be paused for reasons other than what is reflected in these texts.\u201d<\/p>\n

As reported<\/a> by Bitcoinist, the regulatory agency has been in a leadership limbo after the US Senate Agriculture Committee delayed the vote on President Trump\u2019s nominee for CFTC chairman days before the August recess.<\/p>\n

The committee reportedly had delayed the vote following a request from the White House. According to multiple reports, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss\u00a0had allegedly pressed President Trump in July to reconsider his CFTC nominee, claiming that Quintenz wouldn\u2019t \u201cshake up the CFTC enough\u201d and was not \u201caligned with Trump\u2019s agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anonymous sources claim that there has been regulatory chaos at the Commission \u201cas the agency\u2019s responsibilities, and the potential market risks, are multiplying,\u201d Bloomberg wrote last month.<\/p>\n

With the commissioner\u2019s shortage and Quintenz confirmation still pending, it has allegedly been difficult to carry out critical agency business. However, a White House spokesperson denied the claims that the agency was in disarray.<\/p>\n

In August, a group of crypto organizations sent a\u00a0letter to the US President in support of Quintenz, emphasizing that installing a permanent chairman<\/a> is \u201cabsolutely critical\u201d to achieve the Commission\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Quintenz possesses a singular capacity to advance sound and clear regulation that will foster responsible growth and innovation,\u201d the letter said, \u201cHe is, quite simply, the right person at the right time to lead the CFTC.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s chair nominee asserted on X that \u201cprotecting the President and his agenda are more important than any job,\u201d concluding that \u201ctransparency and integrity are paramount\u201d to achieve this.<\/p>\n
