{"id":48199,"date":"2025-09-18T09:16:48","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T09:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=48199"},"modified":"2025-09-18T09:16:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T09:16:48","slug":"australias-financial-watchdog-offers-exemptions-to-stablecoin-intermediaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dogewisperer.com\/?p=48199","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s Financial Watchdog Offers Exemptions to Stablecoin Intermediaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) said it plans to exempt stablecoin intermediaries from the requirement to hold a financial services license.<\/p>\n<p>The financial watchdog said it granted class relief for parties engaging in the distribution of a stablecoin from an existing licensed issuer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asic.gov.au\/about-asic\/news-centre\/news-items\/asic-supports-innovation-through-exemptions-for-distributors-of-australian-stablecoin\/\">an announcement on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exemption means the intermediaries do not require a a separate Australian financial services (AFS), Australian market or clearing and settlement facility licenses when providing services related to stablecoin issued by an existing AFS licensee.<\/p>\n<p>Stablecoins, crypto tokens pegged to the value of a traditional financial asset such as a fiat currency, have become front and center of different countries&#8217; developing regulation of the cryptocurrency industry, following the introduction of regulatory regimes in markets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/07\/17\/genius-act-for-stablecoins-passes-house-on-way-to-be-first-major-u-s-crypto-law\">the U.S.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/08\/01\/hong-kong-s-stablecoin-rules-kick-in-as-it-looks-to-establish-its-crypto-credentials\">Hong Kong<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>More broadly, Australia showed signs of embedding digital assets into its economy earlier this year with the publication of a Treasury whitepaper, describing how the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/03\/21\/australia-proposes-new-crypto-regulation-structure-plans-to-integrate-digital-asset-into-the-economy\">planned to embrace tokenization, real-world assets and wholesale central bank digital currencies (CBDCs)<\/a> to make financial markets more efficient.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2025\/09\/15\/bank-of-england-s-proposed-stablecoin-ownership-limits-are-unworkable-says-crypto-group\">Bank of England\u2019s Proposed Stablecoin Ownership Limits Are Unworkable, Say Crypto Groups: Report<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia&#8217;s Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) said it plans to exempt stablecoin intermediaries from the requirement to hold a financial services license.
