BlackRock\u2019s global head of digital assets, Robbie Mitchnick, was pressed on the prospect of a spot XRP exchange-traded fund during an interview with Nate Geraci on the \u201cCrypto Prime\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n

Will BlackRock Launch A Spot XRP ETF?<\/h2>\n

While he offered no product reveal, he did spell out precisely how BlackRock is thinking about what could come next after its blockbuster Bitcoin and Ether launches.<\/p>\n

Geraci noted on air that he has \u201cpublicly predicted that BlackRock would file for a spot XRP ETF and a spot Solana ETF,\u201d then asked how the firm evaluates \u201cfuture product development around crypto-related ETFs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchnick declined to speak to any specific tickers but was explicit about the decision framework: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of factors that go into that decision-making process obviously, but the biggest driver ultimately is our clients\u2026 What is the level of investor demand? What is the logic and investment thesis for investors and for our clients around these potential products? What problem are we solving for them?\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that BlackRock weighs \u201cmarket cap, liquidity, [and] maturity,\u201d along with \u201cclarity of investment thesis and overall\u2026 portfolio considerations,\u201d describing it as \u201ca constant evaluation process,\u201d not a single point in time.
\nThe exchange came amid a wide-ranging discussion of how quickly BlackRock\u2019s crypto business has scaled and how starkly the firm differentiates Bitcoin from Ether in client portfolios.<\/p>\n

BlackRock Exec On Bitcoin Vs. Ethereum<\/h2>\n

Geraci highlighted the growth figures\u2014\u201c[IBIT] launched in early January 2024. It\u2019s over $85 billion in assets\u2026 [ETHA] launched in July\u2026 around $16 billion\u201d\u2014and asked whether Ethereum\u2019s trajectory matched expectations after Bitcoin\u2019s record start.<\/p>\n

Mitchnick pushed back<\/a> on early narratives that Ether ETFs were a \u201cbust\u201d only because they were \u201cbeing compared against the extraordinary record-setting numbers\u201d of Bitcoin, pointing out that ETHA became \u201cthe third fastest ETF in history to reach $10 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchnick drew a bright line between the two assets from a portfolio-construction perspective. Bitcoin, he said, functions for many allocators as \u201cthis sort of digital gold<\/a> type instrument,\u201d a \u201cglobal scarce decentralized non-sovereign asset\u201d with distinct risk and return drivers.<\/p>\n

Ethereum is \u201ca more nuanced, more technical discussion,\u201d effectively \u201ca bet around blockchain adoption and digital assets more broadly,\u201d with competitive dynamics and questions about \u201cvalue capture in the Ether token versus the activity level on the Ethereum blockchain.\u201d As a result, Bitcoin has seen \u201cmuch greater penetration\u201d among institutional and wealth advisory channels, while Ether ownership remains \u201coverwhelmingly\u201d in the direct investor segment.<\/p>\n

On the gating factors that could unlock the next wave of demand<\/a>, Mitchnick said it is \u201cstill early days\u201d for both institutions and wealth platforms in the United States. Many large firms allow execution-only access, but \u201cthe vast majority of advisers\u2026 still do not have the ability to make decisions on this on behalf of their clients.\u201d<\/p>\n

He described \u201cvarious stages of approving this\u201d across the wirehouses, including one firm \u201cstarting to put it in model portfolios,\u201d and noted that BlackRock\u2019s own model-portfolio team \u201cearly in 2025\u2026 put IBIT allocations into one of our model portfolios.\u201d For institutions, he argued that further episodes of Bitcoin \u201cdecoupling from equities in a\u2026 distressed market environment\u201d would be \u201ccritical\u201d in cementing its role as a diversifier.<\/p>\n

Asked about the SEC\u2019s recent move to approve generic listing standards<\/a> for commodity-based ETPs\u2014the category that includes spot crypto ETFs\u2014Mitchnick called it \u201ca pragmatic step\u201d that \u201cstreamlin[es] the process,\u201d with clear, transparent standards that \u201csupport innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taken together, Mitchnick\u2019s comments sketched the contours of BlackRock\u2019s next steps without tipping its hand. On an XRP ETF, he didn\u2019t confirm or deny anything\u2014but he gave a clear readout of the bar any new product must clear: credible client demand, a defensible investment thesis, sufficient market depth and maturity, and a well-defined role in diversified portfolios.<\/p>\n
