In an interview published on October 4, Steven McClurg, co-founder and CIO of Canary Capital, sketched an aggressive outlook for a prospective US spot XRP exchange-traded fund while mapping the broader contours of a crypto-ETF market he believes will consolidate around a small number of large-cap assets.<\/p>\n

Spot XRP ETFs Will Shock Wall Street<\/h2>\n

Speaking with Paul Barron, McClurg reiterated<\/a> and then upshifted a prior forecast on early demand for an XRP ETF, arguing that first-month inflows could reach an eye-catching $10 billion\u2014double the \u201cbearish\u201d $5 billion figure he had previously floated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI may have changed my mind. I may have been a little bearish,\u201d McClurg said when asked whether $5 billion in the first month still felt realistic. \u201cI\u2019m gonna hold to that number because\u2026 if it\u2019s $10 billion, then I\u2019m still right.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that day-one demand could be unusually thick: \u201cIf it was a billion in one day, I think XRP does two or three billion day one.\u201d For context, he recalled that the first US bitcoin futures ETF launched with \u201cover a billion dollars in inflows\u201d on day one, placing it among the largest ETF debuts on record.<\/p>\n

The Canary Capital executive framed the coming wave of crypto ETFs as broad but not limitless. While some commentators have speculated about dozens or even a hundred listed products across digital assets, McClurg emphasized the constraints of \u201cgeneric listing standards\u201d and real-world demand. \u201cThere\u2019s only about 14 to 15 assets that are going to qualify under the generic listing standards currently and I think maybe another five to 10 after that,\u201d he said, drawing an analogy to the precious-metals complex in which only a handful of commodities command sustainable ETF interest. \u201cI don\u2019t think that more than, say, 25 are going to be relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

McClurg expects asset concentration to mirror what has emerged in spot bitcoin and ether ETFs. Asked whether baskets will win over single-asset funds, he answered that some large-caps will stand on their own. \u201cThings like probably Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana will\u2014each one of those will probably have more assets than any one basket. But after those four I think baskets are the next.\u201d He also confirmed that Canary is developing an \u201cAmerican-made\u201d crypto index theme\u2014\u201cyou may have seen the filing\u201d\u2014and, while declining to discuss weights before index publication, acknowledged that XRP would be included.<\/p>\n

The conversation repeatedly returned to regulatory coordination and timing\u2014especially amid the federal government shutdown that began shortly before the interview. McClurg said the shutdown had already sidelined \u201cnon-essential\u201d SEC workstreams, including reviews of S-1 and S-3 registration statements. \u201cI expect there to be a long delay,\u201d he warned, pushing back on speculation that Solana ETFs could launch \u201cnext week\u201d while staff are furloughed. He nonetheless expects most pending crypto ETFs to clear this year \u201cas long as it\u2019s not a very long shutdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why XRP?<\/h2>\n

The XRP investment case, in McClurg\u2019s telling, will hinge not just on ETF rails but on underlying utility, especially cross-border payments. \u201cWhat I like about XRP is what they\u2019re attempting to build\u2026 for financial rails, including cross-border payments,\u201d he said, recounting his own path into blockchain through the remittances problem. He called current remittance fees \u201cridiculously high,\u201d adding: \u201cI\u2019m for any technology that eliminates a lot of that\u2026 that\u2019s kind of a bit of a secret weapon\u2026 for XRP in comparison to some other ETF offerings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing governance headlines at Ripple, McClurg downplayed the market impact of David Schwartz\u2019s move<\/a> from CTO to XRPL-focused roles. \u201cIt really doesn\u2019t [change my view],\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s still involved. He\u2019s still on the board\u2026 I actually think this is a positive,\u201d allowing fresh leadership to rotate in after a long, contentious period for the company.<\/p>\n

On macro and cycles, McClurg offered a tempered framework. He expects the traditional four-year crypto cycle<\/a> to persist but become \u201cmore and more muted\u201d as market caps rise\u2014\u201cthe law of large numbers.\u201d His year-end bitcoin target remains $140,000 despite loftier calls elsewhere. \u201cThat sounds really low,\u201d he conceded, \u201cbut I just don\u2019t expect\u2026 it\u2019s going to take a lot more work to move that number up.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sees a plausible extension of the rally into Q1\u2013Q2 next year, conditioned by liquidity and rate policy. A replacement of the Fed chair<\/a> in May could prompt a rally in anticipation of deeper cuts, followed by a sell-the-news reaction once delivered. Meanwhile, he flagged weakening US consumer demand\u2014restaurant, airline, and hotel bookings among the early signals\u2014as a growing headwind for risk assets if it persists.<\/p>\n
