Now we\u2019re one step closer to finding out; U.S. Republicans are pushing legislation to enshrine in law President Trump\u2019s executive order that allows crypto exposure in 401(k) plans.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a stretch to say that the move could utterly transform the crypto market, and not just for Bitcoin and Ethereum. The size of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/1\/401kplan.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">401(k) market<\/a> is so large that even a small percentage of the total assets being moved to crypto would significantly reshape the current crypto economy.<\/p>\n<p>The trickle-down impact would extend beyond $BTC and $ETH, opening the door for key infrastructure projects, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.care\/box_27fa54a2abe6756ee07f7504e1c69615?referrer=trumps-crypto-401ks-are-finally-here-what-this-means-for-altcoins-like-%24hyper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER)<\/a>, to gain momentum.<\/p>\n<h2>From Executive Order to Federal Law<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier this year, Trump issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/08\/democratizing-access-to-alternative-assets-for-401k-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Executive Order 14330<\/a>, instructing the Department of Labor to permit \u2018alternative assets,\u2019 including digital assets, in retirement plans if fiduciaries deem them appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>With the order, Trump cracked open the door for crypto to enter the 401(k) and broader retirement market in the US. To address that, Representative Troy Downing has introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/downing.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/downing.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/downing-401k-eo-bill-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Retirement Investment Choice Act<\/a>, a one-page bill that would give Trump\u2019s guidelines the \u2018force and effect of law.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>If enacted, this bill would permanently bind the retirement rule into federal statute.<\/p>\n<p>Under the original executive order, the Labor Department has 180 days to propose rule changes that would allow plan sponsors to include cryptocurrencies and other alternative assets.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s not all easy-going. Real-world challenges,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/government-shutdown-day-14-senate-rejects-republican-backed-funding-bill-for-eighth-time\/ar-AA1Nn5VD?ocid=BingNewsVerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">including the ongoing government shutdown,<\/a>\u00a0could delay the process.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, nine members of Congress have urged the SEC to accelerate implementation, pointing out that it\u2019s not simply about the size of the 401(k) market cap; nearly 90M investors currently lack access to alternative assets under existing rules.<\/p>\n<h2>Open the Capital Floodgates for Crypto<\/h2>\n<p>The implications for capital flows into digital assets are eye-watering. If even just 1 % of U.S. 401(k) assets were allocated to crypto, analysts estimate it could funnel $122B into crypto markets. That figure climbs to approximately $360B if allocations reach 3%.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-606973\" src=\"https:\/\/bitcoinist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/potential-capital-inflows-from401k-2025-10-15.png?resize=700%2C442\" alt=\"Potential capital inflows from 401ks.\" width=\"700\" height=\"442\"><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not like there isn\u2019t already an institutional appetite: BlackRock\u2019s IBIT spot Bitcoin ETF just passed the $100B AUM mark and shows little sign of slowing down. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/bitcoin-etf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The total <\/a>AUM of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/bitcoin-etf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">$BTC ETF <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/bitcoin-etf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sits around $160B<\/a>, with impressive growth over the past year.<\/p>\n<h2>What Crypto 401(k)s Mean for Altcoins<\/h2>\n<p>The best options to buy focus not just on short-term plays, but on long-term infrastructure. That\u2019s exactly the kind of approach that fits hand-in-glove with Trump\u2019s executive order and the new bill.<\/p>\n<p>By incorporating crypto into retirement accounts, the financial industry could simultaneously boost the development and stability of digital assets.
