On Thursday, President Donald Trump granted a pardon<\/a> to former Binance CEO and co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ), following months of speculation and anticipation surrounding this decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the pardon, stating, \u201cPresident Trump exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Binance Celebrates Trump\u2019s Pardon For CZ<\/h2>\n

This scrutiny came during former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration, which focused heavily on digital assets<\/a> and firms like Binance. In 2023, Zhao pleaded guilty to violations of US anti-money-laundering (AML) laws and served a four-month prison sentence as part of a $4.3 billion settlement with US authorities.<\/p>\n

In response to the pardon, Binance expressed in a new statement gratitude on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Following the announcement, Zhao expressed his appreciation, stating <\/a>he is \u201cdeeply grateful for today\u2019s pardon and to President Trump for upholding America\u2019s commitment to fairness, innovation, and justice.\u201d He further pledged to contribute to making America the capital of crypto and advancing Web3 on a global scale.<\/p>\n

However, the pardon has drawn criticism from experts like Adam Cochran, who described the decision as \u201cdisgusting\u2014even for Trump.\u201d Cochran pointed out<\/a> that Zhao had admitted to allowing groups such as Hamas and Wagner to utilize Binance for sanctions violations.<\/p>\n

Expert Raises Concerns Over CZ\u2019s Ties To Trump<\/h2>\n

Cochran highlighted several developments linked to Zhao\u2019s pardon, including Binance\u2019s partnership with Trump\u2019s World Liberty Financial<\/a> (WLFI) and collaboration with Dominari Holdings, which includes Trump\u2019s sons and operates out of Trump Tower, on various projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cochran also questioned the significance of the pardon, emphasizing that Zhao had already served his time and asked, \u201cWhat difference does the pardon make?\u201d He argued that it allows Zhao to take the reins of Binance or other financial projects again and removes oversight requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cochran concluded that this situation represents \u201cthe CLEAREST case of pay-for-crime,\u201d asserting that Trump has made it clear that \u201ccrime can be overlooked in America\u201d as long as one can afford to pay for a pardon.<\/p>\n
