US President Donald Trump has addressed the controversial pardon recently granted to Binance\u2019s co-founder and former CEO, Changpeng Zhao, denying any links to the crypto tycoon and allegations of potential corruption.<\/p>\n

US President Addresses Binance\u2019s Founder Pardon<\/h2>\n

In a recent CBS News 60 Minutes interview<\/a>, President Trump defended his decision to pardon Binance\u2019s co-founder Changpeng \u2018CZ\u2019 Zhao, which faced major backlash from multiple members of the US Congress.<\/p>\n

On October 23, the White House revealed<\/a> Trump had pardoned Zhao, two years after pleading guilty, affirming that the US President \u201cexercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS News correspondent Norah O\u2019Donnell asked the US President about the reasons behind his decision to pardon the former CEO of Binance, who pleaded guilty to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) violations in 2023 while leading the crypto exchange.<\/p>\n

Trump explained that he doesn\u2019t know who Zhao personally or who he is, but heard that his case was part of the Biden administration\u2019s \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against the crypto industry and was \u201cset up\u201d and a \u201cvictim of weaponization\u201d by the previous government, like him and many others.<\/p>\n

This man was, in my opinion, from what I was told, this is, you know, a four-month sentence. But this man was treated really badly by the Biden administration. And he was given a jail term. He\u2019s highly respected. He\u2019s a very successful guy. They sent him to jail and they really set him up. That\u2019s my opinion. I was told about it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Trump \u2018Not Concerned\u2019 About Corruption Claims<\/h2>\n

Further detailing his reasoning, the US President affirmed that he knew \u201cit may look bad,\u201d but he had to \u201cdo the right thing\u201d by pardoning Binance\u2019s co-founder, later adding that he was \u201cnot concerned\u201d about the appearance of corruption and play-for-play.<\/p>\n

Notably, Democratic lawmakers have pressed<\/a> multiple government officials, including the US Special Envoy for peace missions, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)\u2019s former acting chairman, and the head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), about Trump\u2019s crypto ventures and potential conflicts of interest.<\/p>\n

Among the concerns, lawmakers have questioned<\/a> a $2 billion deal between Trump-backed World Liberty Financial (WLFI) and the Emirati firm MGX, facilitated by Binance, alleging that the President has advertised a \u201cstaggering model for corruption\u201d by using USD1 to finance business between \u201ca foreign government-backed entity (MGX) and a foreign corporation that pleaded guilty to criminal violations of U.S. anti-money laundering and sanctions laws (Binance).\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about the appearance of a potential play-for-play, Trump affirmed that he knew nothing about the deal because he is \u201ctoo busy\u201d and his sons oversee the family\u2019s crypto ventures.<\/p>\n

I can only tell you this. My sons are into it. I\u2019m glad they are, because it\u2019s probably a great industry, crypto. I think it\u2019s good. You know, they\u2019re running a business, they\u2019re not in government. (\u2026) My sons are involved in crypto much more than I\u2013 me. I\u2013 I know very little about it, other than one thing. It\u2019s a huge industry. And if we\u2019re not gonna be the head of it, China, Japan, or someplace else is. So I am behind it 100%.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The US President stated that he wants to \u201cmake crypto great for America\u201d and doesn\u2019t want another country<\/a> to be the global leader of the industry, as \u201cit\u2019s a kind of an industry where basically you\u2019re going to have number one and you\u2019re not gonna have a number two.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now we\u2019re number one by a long shot (\u2026). The same way we\u2019re number one with AI, we\u2019re number one with crypto. And I wanna keep it that way,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
