The Supreme Court will hear arguments on November 5 over whether his use of emergency powers to levy global trade duties crossed constitutional lines. At stake are hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs on goods from China, Mexico, and Canada, as well as a 10% global baseline levy that Trump ordered through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Lower courts have already ruled that the move exceeded presidential authority, describing the former president\u2019s actions as \u201cimpermissible<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> under federal law.<\/p>\n

It could also destabilize trade relationships just as markets adjust to Trump\u2019s proposed \u201creciprocal tariff<\/a>\u201d doctrine, which would impose duties ranging from 10% to 41% on countries that fail to sign new trade deals with Washington.<\/p>\n
