The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has released new guidance that allows national banks to hold specific cryptocurrencies <\/span>for the sole purpose of covering<\/span> blockchain network fees. <\/span>This decision, outlined in Interpretive Letter 1186 issued on November 18, 2025, confirms that banks <\/span>can keep<\/span> crypto assets on their books <\/span>as part of their<\/span> operational <\/span>needs<\/span> when acting as principal.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the letter, banks can store native crypto assets like ETH when they <\/span>know they\u2019ll need<\/span> to pay network fees in the near future.
